[Updated 07:10 16/10/2017]

The remnants of Hurricane Ophelia bring stormy weather to the west and north today. The rest of the week is set to be unsettled and further very windy spells are possible.

Monday starts wet across northern and western areas but elsewhere it is a drier picture. Winds are already exceeding gale force in the south west and during the course of the day the worst conditions tracks northwards. Gusts in excess of 80mph are possible in exposed parts of the west and across Northern Ireland. Travel disruption is likely and the impact of the winds will be amplified because most trees are still partially leaved. Heavy outbreaks of rain will be an additional hazard in parts of the north and west. In contrast central and eastern England remain bright and very warm with temperatures possibly edging to 25C (77F). See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the strongest winds affect northern regions where gusts of over 60mph continue. Outbreaks of rain continue in the far north but elsewhere it will be mostly dry and clear spells develop.

Tomorrow winds ease in the north but wet weather continues in parts of Scotland and possibly Northern Ireland. Outbreaks of rain could also push across parts of southern England. It will be cooler in the south than recently. On Wednesday intermittent spells of rain spreads northwards.

The rest of the week stays very unsettled. There is the potential for very heavy rain and strong winds in the southern half of the UK as low pressure systems move in from the Atlantic. One of them could become Storm Brian.
