The weather remains unsettled during the next few days and it will often be mild, particularly in the southern half of the UK. However, through the second half of the week it turns colder in the north and the risk of snow begins to increase. Details for the Christmas period remain very uncertain, but some computer models are showing colder air pushing southwards.
Tuesday starts wet in parts of the south east and East Anglia. There are also showers in northern and western areas.
Through the day sunny spells develop widely, but showers continue in the north and west. Over high ground in northern Britain they could fall as sleet or snow at times. Other areas will be dry after the early rain clears from the south east. Quite windy, especially in the north west where gales are possible in coastal locations.
Temperatures range from 5C (41F) in Scotland to 10C (50F) in southern England. See the rain radar for the latest view.
Tonight heavy showers continue in the north west and in Scotland they turn increasingly wintry even at low levels. England and Wales begin mostly dry, but through the night heavy outbreaks of rain steadily push eastwards. East anglia and the south eastern corner probably remain dry. Windy in the west and north.
Tomorrow outbreaks of rain in southern and central Britain clear eastwards. Brighter skies follow, but there will be showers in the west and the north of the UK. In Scotland they will bring a wintry mix and become heavy at times. Temperatures close to the average.
During Thursday outbreaks of rain extend across much of England, Wales and and Northern Ireland. Some heavy burst are likely. Scotland has dry and bright periods, but scattered showers are likely. Mild in the southern and central areas, cold in Scotland.
Friday is looking very mixed. Scotland and the far north of England probably have a cold day with outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow. Elsewhere there is a risk of showers or longer spells of rain, although in southern Wales and southern England it could turn brighter. Cold in the north, mild in the south.
Forecast confidence for the weekend is low. It looks as though the north can expect rather cold conditions and there is a possibility of sleet or snow, especially over high ground. In the south it stays milder initially, but temperatures could dip through the Christmas period.
