Nothing overly cold on the latest update from the beeb with the exception of the north over the weekend, otherwise 2022 is going out on a mild note for most

Slight tweak in outlook from Met Office 16-30 day outlook going from the "Likelihood of colder than average conditions occurring more frequently or below average/colder than average conditions more likely towards mid January!" to todays "although brief colder spells from the north are possible!"

Sunday 8 Jan - Sunday 22 Jan
Confidence remains low into mid-January. The weather is likely to remain changeable with some spells of wet and windy weather, especially in the north. There is an increased likelihood of longer dry periods, especially towards the east and southeast. Temperatures are likely to be mild at the start of the period, although brief cold spells from the north and the northwest are possible.

Monday 9 Jan -Monday 23 Jan

Confidence remains low into mid-January, though most likely scenario is for changeable weather to continue. Mild at first but briefer cold spells from the north and northwest are possible at times, which would bring heavy snow showers to the north. Increased risk of overnight frosts. A trend back towards milder, wetter weather is most likely following this.

Meanwhile, the Met Office have issued a yellow warning for rain for Friday. That warning is due to come into effect just to the west of here, so I am currently outside that warning area here in Hawick.

However, that same weather warning goes on to split Edinburgh into two along a line which runs through the city centre.

This weather warning will only be in force to the west of that line but this means that when I return home to NW Edinburgh on Friday, I will be heading into that warning area and other parts of Edinburgh such as Wester Hailes and possibly where Jerry is next to Blackford Hill are also in that warning area.

Yet parts of Edinburgh to the east of that line such as Newhaven, Leith, Portobello, Niddrie and Craigmillar are all just outside that warning area.

As we all know, weather warnings are not exactly uncommon but this is probably only the first time that I can remember a weather warning splitting a small city like Edinburgh in that fashion.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

A "big January freeze" is headed for the UK as winter storms and freezing arctic weather could "bring weather chaos" for the new year, according to the Daily Star. Suggesting readers should "get those thermals at the ready", the paper says the likely icy conditions have come "courtesy of the US bomb cyclone" storm, which caused havoc in the US and Canada last week.

Silly season started in the Express. Apparently forecasters are predicting the heaviest snow for 12 years in early January and the obligatory viscious American spell is moving across the Atlantic to here. Usual cobblers.
