Level 3 cold weather alert extended until Monday morning
Current alert level: Level 3 - Cold Weather Action
Issued at: 10:40 on Wed 8 Mar 2023
There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0900 on Wednesday 08 Mar and 0900 on Monday 13 Mar in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.
This is an extension to the previously issued alert on Monday. Very cold weather is expected across most of England this week, with widespread frosts overnight and temperatures struggling to rise much above freezing in some places during the day. A band of rain, sleet and snow will move across the southern half of England on Wednesday and overnight into Thursday, with icy stretches developing. To the north of this should stay dry, although a few snow showers are possible in the northeast, but very cold temperatures will see a severe frost develop.
On Thursday, the focus shifts slightly further northwards, with another band of sleet and snow pushing northeastwards across central and northern England. There is some uncertainty as to how this band progresses, with current forecasts bringing that area of sleet and snow back southeastwards on Friday to affect parts of southern England once again. Further outbreaks of snow are possible over the weekend, as well as widespread frosts and icy stretches. Milder temperatures look like they may start to encroach from the southwest through Sunday, confidence on this however is currently low.
An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue, but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link:
