Too late for that now as far as I'm concerned (we are now into meteorological spring after all).

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I see from the risk matrix that if the Thur/Fri becomes more likely and the impact stays the same it could upgrade to Amber/Red.
Hope this isn't done lightly as it will result in Schools etc closing down when there is so much uncertainty.    Also yellow warnings have covered 5-10cm of snowfall in the past adequately.  Fair enough if it is for a populated area that they think will receive 20cm plus.

Updated met office warning from 7am tomorrow to 2pm Friday

Heavy snow has the potential to cause disruption on Thursday and Friday.

Reason for update

The warning area has been trimmed away from parts of central and northeast Scotland and moved from high to medium impacts.

An area of low pressure will move across the UK on Thursday and Friday with snow developing across Wales and central England early on Thursday morning. This is expected to move slowly north during the day, becoming slow-moving across north Wales, northern England, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland during the afternoon and evening before slowly clearing southeast on Friday.

Snow will likely turn to sleet or rain at times at lower elevations, especially in the south of the warning area, as well as near eastern coasts. At low levels including major cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle accumulations are expected to be limited with a small chance of 2-5 cm falling. However, significant snow accumulations are possible over hills of northern England (including populated areas of South and West Yorkshire), Northern Ireland and southern Scotland.

Here, 10-15 cm is expected quite widely above 100 metres, with a chance that 25-40 cm could fall in some places . Additionally, there is potential for strong winds, which may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow. Ice is likely to develop widely on Friday night as this system clears away.

Level 3 cold weather alert extended until Monday morning

Current alert level: Level 3 - Cold Weather Action
Issued at: 10:40 on Wed 8 Mar 2023

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0900 on Wednesday 08 Mar and 0900 on Monday 13 Mar in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

This is an extension to the previously issued alert on Monday. Very cold weather is expected across most of England this week, with widespread frosts overnight and temperatures struggling to rise much above freezing in some places during the day. A band of rain, sleet and snow will move across the southern half of England on Wednesday and overnight into Thursday, with icy stretches developing. To the north of this should stay dry, although a few snow showers are possible in the northeast, but very cold temperatures will see a severe frost develop.

On Thursday, the focus shifts slightly further northwards, with another band of sleet and snow pushing northeastwards across central and northern England. There is some uncertainty as to how this band progresses, with current forecasts bringing that area of sleet and snow back southeastwards on Friday to affect parts of southern England once again. Further outbreaks of snow are possible over the weekend, as well as widespread frosts and icy stretches. Milder temperatures look like they may start to encroach from the southwest through Sunday, confidence on this however is currently low.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue, but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/#?tab=map

Arpege has a snowfest lasting almost 24 hours from Thursday morning for a large area covering the North Midlands/North Wales/NW England/the western two-thirds of Yorkshire/NE England. Perhaps a snow/sleet/rain mix toward western coasts/into Cheshire.

The sweet spots look like being the Peak District & North Wales, where I wouldn't be surprised to see in excess of 30cm for areas with some altitude

Saint Snow in Model Output wrote:

Thomas you-know-who was suggesting 40cm for parts of the Peak District; and although he didn't say it, the synoptics imply there will be a lot of drifting.
