Colder and showery conditions have now pushed down across the UK. Will this be the dominant pattern for the coming week and Easter weekend?
In a word, unsettled sums things up for the days ahead. Areas of low pressure will remain close to the UK so all areas can expect showers or longer spells of rain. The jet stream is taking a more southerly track than is often the case, therefore the driest conditions may often be in the far north. However, this is also where it will be the coldest because Arctic air is likely to feed in at times.
The chart below illustrates the general set up for the middle of next week. Low pressure is centred over Ireland, with areas of showers or longer spells of rain circulating around it. The isobars are packed quite closely together, suggesting rather windy conditions.
The combination of cloud, wind, showers or longer spells of rain suggests it will be rather chilly. It could remain cold enough for sleet or snow over the Scottish mountains so perhaps there will be some decent conditions for winter sports during the Easter weekend?
The broadly unsettled pattern appears set to continue through the Easter period. However, some computer models runs are showing very warm air close to the south east of England.
The chart below shows forecast pressure patterns and temperatures at approximately 1500m above sea level. The UK is in the centre and the yellow - orange shading covering much of western Europe indicates a warm air mass. It's not out of the question that some of that warmth could filter into southern and eastern counties.
Nonetheless, even if some of that warm air reaches our shores low pressure wouldn't be far away and we could still expect hefty showers or more persistent outbreaks of rain to be a risk.
In summary it is an unsettled outlook. Significant rain is likely in all regions, although the far north could have the driest conditions. Temperatures will be pegged back in the coming days, but it's not out of the question that it could turn warmer at times this Easter, particularly in the south east.
