Met office update

UK Outlook for Tuesday 25 Apr 2017 to Thursday 4 May 2017:

Tuesday and Wednesday will be cold with a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK, with the most frequent showers likely across northern parts and along windward coasts. Some of the showers will be heavy and wintry, with hail and thunder likely at times. It will be windy in the north too. We will see widespread overnight frosts at first, but temperatures look set to slowly rise through the rest of the week. Northern counties will see outbreaks of rain interspersed by showery spells during the second half of the week. Meanwhile, southern parts will see less frequent showers. Looking ahead, the driest and brightest weather is expected to be in the west, probably spreading to the rest of the country by the Mayday Bank holiday.

UK Outlook for Thursday 4 May 2017 to Thursday 18 May 2017:

Early May is likely to stay on the chilly side, with an ongoing risk of frost by night in a few places. It may stay drier than average, but with a few short wetter and windier spells at times. During the first half of the month, temperatures are likely to rise gradually, returning to average and then perhaps above average. This will mean that we should lose the risk of frosts, and it will start to feel pleasantly warm in any sunshine by day. At this stage, it looks as though it will stay dry and settled most of the time.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 26 Apr 2017 to Friday 5 May 2017:

Wednesday and Thursday will be cold with a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK, the most frequent showers likely across northern parts and along windward coasts. Some of the showers will be heavy and wintry, with hail and thunder likely at times. It will be windy in the north too. Many places should become dry on Thursday. We will see widespread, perhaps sharp, overnight frosts at first, but temperatures look set to slowly rise through the end of next week. North-western areas will see outbreaks of rain interspersed by showery spells and strong winds. Meanwhile, southern parts will see less frequent showers. Increasingly settled, drier and probably noticeably warmer conditions will probably spread to the rest of the country as we head through the first week of May.

UK Outlook for Saturday 6 May 2017 to Saturday 20 May 2017:

High pressure is likely to be dominant through the majority of the period, meaning that below average rainfall is most probable during this time. However, low pressure may bring the possibility of less settled conditions to south-western areas at times. During the first half of the month, temperatures are likely to be average or slightly above average. This will mean that we should lose the risk of frosts, and it will feel pleasantly warm at times. By the middle of the month there is a possibility of a return to cooler conditions, although confidence in this is very low at this time.

UK Outlook for Thursday 27 Apr 2017 to Saturday 6 May 2017:

Thursday will stay rather cold with a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK with the most frequent showers likely across eastern parts and along windward coasts. Some of the showers will be heavy and wintry, with hail and thunder likely at times. We will see widespread, perhaps sharp, overnight frosts at first, but temperatures look set to slowly rise through the end of next week. By Friday and into next weekend, more unsettled conditions are likely generally, especially in the northwest, with the best of any drier and brighter spells in the south-east. By the first week of May, western areas may continue rather unsettled whereas eastern parts should be drier, brighter and warmer.

UK Outlook for Sunday 7 May 2017 to Sunday 21 May 2017:

High pressure appears more likely to be dominant through the majority of the period, meaning that below average rainfall is most probable during this time. However, low pressure may bring the possibility of less settled conditions at times, especially across western areas. During the first half of the month, temperatures are likely to be average or slightly above average. This will mean that we should lose the risk of frosts, and it will feel warm at times. Towards the end of the period, there is a greater chance of it turning very warm, although confidence at this stage is very low.

UK Outlook for Friday 28 Apr 2017 to Sunday 7 May 2017:

Friday is looking to have a north-west to south-east split across the country. Wet weather is fairly likely across northern and western parts with the best of the dry and bright weather further south-east, though even here the odd shower can't be ruled out at times. Temperatures will continue to recover to near average across the country. Into next weekend, more unsettled conditions are likely, especially in the north and west, with the best of any drier and brighter spells once again in the south-east. As we move into the first week of May, western and northern areas may continue to be rather unsettled whereas southern and eastern parts should be drier, brighter and feeling warmer.

UK Outlook for Monday 8 May 2017 to Monday 22 May 2017:

As we move through May high pressure appears more likely to be dominant through the majority of the period, meaning that below average rainfall is most probable during this time. However, low pressure may bring the possibility of less settled conditions at times, especially across western and northern areas. Temperatures are likely to be average or slightly above average. This will mean that we should lose the risk of frosts, and it will feel warm at times.

BBC monthly outlook

Monday 24 April—Sunday 30 April
Cold and showery for a time, some rain later

Some really cold air will be spreading southwards on Monday, following a band of rain which will clear southern England in the evening. Wintry showers will follow to Scotland and northeast England, with snow to quite low levels. By Tuesday, cold northerly winds will be bringing sunny intervals and showers of rain, sleet and snow to many places. By Wednesday, the showers, still wintry in places, will mainly affect England, while the north and west turn drier. For Thursday and Friday, cloudier and less cold weather, with a little rain, will spread from the northwest, leading on to a mixed weekend - with most places seeing rain at some stage, especially the northwest.

Monday 1 May—Sunday 7 May
Early May warmth

After the unsettled weekend, settled weather looks set to develop in early May. High pressure will build over the country, bringing most areas several days of dry and warmer weather with some sunshine, although it may take some time to extend to northwest Scotland. Before the air warms up, however, there could be a couple of very chilly nights with ground frost. Winds are likely to turn south or southeasterly, while any threat of rain later in the week is likely to be focused towards southwestern parts.

Monday 8 May—Sunday 21 May
Often dry - but warm or cold?

For the middle fortnight of the month there is still likely to be a good deal of dry weather with sunny spells around, with high pressure staying in charge of the weather pattern over the UK. Exactly where the high settles will have an important influence on the temperature. Although warm at times, such springtime highs tend to move westwards. This suggests that western parts will stay driest and sunniest, with the south and east most likely to catch any approaching bands of rain, but it may also mean that colder air will return on northerly winds at times.

UK Outlook for Saturday 29 Apr 2017 to Monday 8 May 2017:

Saturday is likely to be mainly dry and bright with temperatures less cold than recently, though it will still be rather cool for the time of year. However, rain is likely overnight in the far north and west and this may well spread across the rest of the UK on Sunday, with the best chance of drier weather in the east. There may be some further rain around on Bank Holiday Monday, but also some drier and brighter spells. As we move into the first week of May, we're expecting more settled weather to become established, with temperatures rising significantly giving us a warm week, perhaps very warm in some parts. The dry and settled weather is likely to last to the end of this period.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 9 May 2017 to Tuesday 23 May 2017:

High pressure appears more likely to be dominant in the second week of May meaning that below average rainfall is most probable during this time. However, there is a chance of less settled conditions at times, especially across southern and southwestern areas. Temperatures are likely to be above average for the time of year with a chance of some very warm weather at times, with limited risk of frost. The forecast for the third week is less certain, though on balance, we might expect these settled and warmer than average conditions to continue.

UK Outlook for Sunday 30 Apr 2017 to Tuesday 9 May 2017:

The tail end of the Bank Holiday weekend looks more unsettled, with rain, already across some west and south-western parts of the UK, extending across the rest of the country. Rain could be heavy across south-western areas, and it will be increasingly windy for many. However, some north-eastern areas could stay dry throughout the long weekend, and temperatures will generally be near or slightly below normal. Tuesday will remain on the wet and windy side, but as next week progresses, drier, more settled and increasingly sunny weather should become established. South-east England is expected to see this change first. Temperatures are likely to respond too with some places becoming very warm, but the main uncertainty is just how quickly this change occurs.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 10 May 2017 to Wednesday 24 May 2017:

High pressure appears to be in charge during the middle part of May, with temperatures likely to be above average, possible very warm at times. It also looks drier than average, especially across the north-west of the UK, with central and southern Britain perhaps seeing some wetter weather occasionally. Towards the end of May, indications on a particular weather type are less certain, with temperatures likely to be closer to normal; some pleasantly warm days but some chilly nights. Rainfall also looks to become nearer average too.

UK Outlook for Monday 1 May 2017 to Wednesday 10 May 2017:

Bank Holiday Monday currently looks likely to be rather unsettled in the south, with some showery outbreaks of rain moving across the UK. However there will be brighter spells in-between, and in the brightness it should feel fairly pleasant, most likely in the north. There may well also be some showers on Tuesday, and to a much lesser extent on Wednesday, but on the whole Wednesday is likely to be dry with some sunshine for many. Temperatures early next week are expected to be around average for early May. Then from Thursday onwards we are likely to see high pressure dominate, with largely dry and settled weather prevailing, with increasing amounts of sunshine. The settled weather is also likely to bring temperatures slightly above average, especially during the sunnier interludes.

UK Outlook for Thursday 11 May 2017 to Thursday 25 May 2017:

Heading into the middle of May, and on balance the dry and settled weather is likely to continue to dominate. There may however be some occasional wetter interludes, with western areas more likely to see these. Temperatures are likely to remain above average, and possibly becoming very warm at times at first, before perhaps returning to nearer normal towards the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 2 May 2017 to Thursday 11 May 2017:

Any showers on Tuesday should become lighter for many, but some may linger in the south east. Elsewhere it will be largely dry and bright, with some sunshine. Wednesday is likely to be dry with some sunshine for many, and temperatures next week are expected to be around average for early May, meaning we will lose the risk of overnight frosts. Then from Thursday onwards we are likely to see high pressure dominate. Easterly winds will develop, with largely dry and settled weather prevailing, and increasing amounts of sunshine. The settled weather is also likely to bring temperatures slightly above average, especially during the sunnier interludes, but it will feel cooler along eastern coasts, and there will be the risk of sea fog at times here too.

UK Outlook for Friday 12 May 2017 to Friday 26 May 2017:

Heading into the middle of May, continued dry and settled weather remains most probable. There may however be some occasional wetter interludes though, with the south most likely to see these. Temperatures are likely to remain above average for the time of year, and they will possibly become very warm at times. It will also continue to be drier than average.
