BBC monthly outlook

Monday 10 April—Sunday 16 April
Chill in the air in lead up to Easter

We look to the north for our air this week. A short burst of Arctic air on Monday, and then a longer spell of that air later this week. So after a warm weekend, especially over England and Wales, we will all notice a drop in temperatures. There will also be a more unsettled spell of weather, especially over more northern parts of the British Isles, with stronger winds and outbreaks of rain. The heaviest rain will be on Tuesday across the north and west of Scotland. England and Wales will maintain a lot of dry, bright weather during the week but becoming breezy here too and feeling noticeably cooler. This cooler air looks set to remain in place into the Easter weekend, with temperatures some ten degrees Celsius lower than the previous weekend. However, there will still be some drier weather with sunny spells, but also brief periods of showers or longest spells of rain. These showers most likely in the north with snow on the hills.

Monday 17 April—Sunday 23 April
Beginning to warm up again

Cool, rather changeable conditions are expected on Easter Monday with the driest, brightest weather likely to be over southern England and south Wales. As we go through next week, there will be further showers or longer spells of rain affecting northern parts of the British Isles, with showers falling as snow over the hills. High pressure looks set to remain close to southwest England, maintaining a lot of dry weather across the country and only brief unsettled interludes, these most likely in the north. Winds will start off from a cool northwesterly direction, but towards the end of the week we begin to see milder air crossing the country with a rise in temperatures.

Monday 24 April—Sunday 7 May
High staying close by

April looks set to finish with high pressure never too far away from the British Isles. This means a lot of dry weather to end the month, resulting in a much drier than average April for many areas. There will be some short lived, more unsettled periods of weather with outbreaks of rain and stronger winds coming in from the Atlantic, mostly affecting Northern Ireland as well as the north and west of Scotland. Temperatures are expected to be close to normal for the end of April, with frosts likely in more rural locations. At this stage, a similar scenario is expected to persist into early May. There are signs of milder air returning to the UK, with higher daytime and overnight temperatures.

Next week

When do we see a change to more unsettled weather?

UK Outlook for Saturday 15 Apr 2017 to Monday 24 Apr 2017:

During the Easter weekend, we are likely to see a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers will be heaviest and most frequent across the north and east with the chance they may turn wintry across the higher ground of Scotland. Conversely many southern and south-western parts will often remain dry, with the best of the sunny spells. It will become breezy for many, especially in the north where there is a low risk of gales. Temperatures will also be on the cool side, but feeling pleasant in any sunshine. The week after Easter will continue to see rather mixed and colder than average weather, with the north and east most likely to see some rain, whilst the south-west often staying dry and bright.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 25 Apr 2017 to Tuesday 9 May 2017:

As we head towards the end of April and into early May, confidence becomes low. At first the most likely scenario is that we see a mixture of weather with some short changeable interludes and some settled spells too. With northerly winds more likely temperatures will tend to be colder than normal. However, later in the period there are indications that it will become more settled and generally dry, although there remains a lower risk of some occasionally changeable weather. As a result, temperatures will start to rise perhaps becoming warmer than normal towards the end of the period.

The rest of the period is looking to be colder than average, with night frosts and showers in the north and east, perhaps wintry at times. However, drier than normal conditions are expected to develop across many southern and western areas. .

Local weather exceeding MetO expectations. Yesterday (Thu) long sunny periods on the coast, not much in the way of cloud (though my daughter in London says it remained overcast up there). Today (Fri), woke up to cloudless skies and still bright though some high cloud has come in, against a forecast of dull and cloudy weather.

BBC forecast last night (it might have been Matt Taylor- not sure) warned of temperatures as low as -7C in prone, sheltered spots in the Midlands early this week. Not sure if England might get a date record low out of that.

Edit:

It won't give a UK record- but maybe an England one?

BBC Monthly outlook

Monday 17 April—Sunday 23 April
Slowly, but surely, warming up.

A chilly start to the week across much of the UK with cold air being dragged down from the north. There will be a few showers around on Monday but many of us will have a dry day with good sunny spells. Overnight into Tuesday cold air will spread across all of the UK, bringing a frosty night for most but also pleasant sunshine during Tuesday. It will be a chilly day, especially in the south-east where there will be more of a breeze and some showers. During the rest of the week temperatures will climb steadily, particularly across the south where there will also be some decent sunshine at times thanks to the influence of high pressure. Overnight however, it will be cold with a risk of frost. Further north it will be a cloudier picture with a chance of some rain and strong winds at times and milder conditions by night.

Monday 24 April—Sunday 30 April
A chill returns for the end of the month.

To start the week a northerly breeze is likely to return across all parts of the UK, so it will turn chilly with overnight frosts possible in all areas. At times there will be showers but for many it will be mostly dry with some good sunshine. In the far north and east, it will be cloudy at times with a chance of rain and strong winds.

Monday 1 May—Sunday 14 May
High and dry

High pressure looks set to remain close by as we head into May bringing settled and drier than average weather. However, brief spells of unsettled weather will mean some rain at times, mainly for the north and east. Although the new month is likely to start quite chilly, temperatures should rise as we head towards the middle of the month.

Next week
As the days lengthen could there be any sign of summer on the way.

UK Outlook for Saturday 22 Apr 2017 to Monday 1 May 2017:

Next weekend will be rather chilly with a risk of overnight frost. Generally there'll be a good deal of dry weather and sunny spells, particularly so across the south. On Sunday an area of cloud and rain could spread into north-western parts which would give some snow on the high ground and gales in the north. Into the new working week it will stay rather cold with a continued risk of frost. We'll see a mix of typical spring like weather of sunshine and showers, so it should feel warm by day under the sunshine, with fairly light winds, but will feel a little chilly under any cloud and wind. There's a small chance however that mid-week we may see a spell of wet and windy weather for a time.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 2 May 2017 to Tuesday 16 May 2017:

May is likely to start on the chilly side, with an ongoing risk of frost by night in a few places. It's likely to drier than average, but with some shorter changeable spells at times. Gradually through this period towards the middle of May we should start to see temperatures rise, returning to average, meaning we should begin to lose the risk of frosts, and it will start to feel pleasantly warm in any sunshine by day.

UK Outlook for Sunday 23 Apr 2017 to Tuesday 2 May 2017:

Sunday will start dry, cold and frosty in places before cloud and rain arrives in the north-west later. This will bring strong winds and short-lived snow to northern hills as well as gales in the far north. The rain will become light and patchy by the time it reaches south-east England on Monday. Next week is likely to become colder with a continued risk of night frost. We'll see some typical spring-like weather of sunshine and heavy showers, with a chilly feel where it is cloudy or windy. The driest weather is likely in the west. There's a small chance that we may see a spell of wet and windy weather for a time mid-week, perhaps bringing gales, sleet and snow to the north.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 3 May 2017 to Wednesday 17 May 2017:

May is likely to start on the chilly side, with an ongoing risk of frost by night in a few places. It will probably stay drier than average, but with some shorter changeable spells at times. Through the period leading into the middle of May, temperatures are likely to rise gradually, returning to average and perhaps above average. This will mean that we should lose the risk of frosts, and it will start to feel pleasantly warm in any sunshine by day. At this stage, it looks as though it will stay dry and settled most of the time.

UK Outlook for Monday 24 Apr 2017 to Wednesday 3 May 2017:

We are expecting Monday to be rather cold with a band of rain moving southwards, probably bringing the first rain of any note to southern areas for several weeks. It is likely to be very windy in Scotland and Northern Ireland with gales and showers, these wintry in the north. The rest of next week could well become even colder with a widespread risk of night frost. Sunshine and heavy showers are anticipated, with a chilly feel where it is cloudy or windy. Showers in the north are likely to be wintry mid-week and some hail and sleet may spread further south at times. The driest and brightest weather is expected to be in the west, probably spreading to the rest of the country by the Mayday Bank holiday.

UK Outlook for Thursday 4 May 2017 to Thursday 18 May 2017:

Early May is likely to stay on the chilly side, with an ongoing risk of frost by night in a few places. It may stay drier than average, but with a few short wetter and windier spells at times. During the first half of the month, temperatures are likely to rise gradually, returning to average and then perhaps above average. This will mean that we should lose the risk of frosts, and it will start to feel pleasantly warm in any sunshine by day.
