Very windy and wet out, but there seems to be a lack of significant gusts this morning, so does not feel overly bad.

4.2mm of rain so far down to 949.6mb

I mentioned yesterday the risk of a wave on the cold front pushing back into the SE corner of England. That is now looking like a real possibility. Take a look at the 06z fax chart and you can see the wave developing out to the SW of the UK.

Helen Willets on 5 Live just now saying they are keeping a close eye on this and it could hit the SE later on. If it does it will make the flooding situation much worse.

Today it's still a bit blowy outside but the main winds passed early morning, nowhere near as bad as mondays/tuesday storm here and a lot less rain thank the lord.

Another wild night up here. SSE-ly wind increased through late evening and was raging from about midnight to about 0500 together with heavy driving rain. The biggest surprise of all occurred around 0130 with 3 flashes of lightning and very loud thunder, obviously bouncing around with the wind which was probably gusting 40-50 mph at the time. Not in any way the usual set-up for thunder and it's the first I can recall up here all year!

The wind has dropped right away now but the barometer is presently reading about 952mb.

Managed to get an update for the situation here - river levels just about holding out, so no evacs required Cant/Ashfd just yet. Watching today's rainfall obviously, but so far so good 👍

Off out soon, to provide some help to someone who's just returned home to find his flat was gutted in the fire the other day, and he's lost everything! What a shite thing to come home to eh?!

Winds eased up this morning to be just blustery, but the gusts are picking up again.

Alternating between drizzle and light rain.

Last night's surprise thunder and lightning isn't showing up on most of the detection systems. The only one I could find was an archive at the Iceland Met Office (using Met Office data) and it shows the very limited extent of the lightning up here last night between 00 and 03. No sign of thunderstorms from the synoptic reports at Dyce, Inverbervie and Aboyne overnight. As a matter of interest the 03z ob from Inverbervie was 150 53 gust 70 knots.

Wind gusts picking up now, 65mph in the last hour or so. Plus a fence panel has given up the ghost, thankfully managed to secure it to stop it sailing away. Joy.

Picking up here too. Gust 48.7mph, sustained wind (max) 38mph.

I am in a sheltered location. I have a wind offset that helps, but that compensates more for the poor height of the anemometer than the location itself. Gusts in more exposed parts around here must be at 60-65mph I would guess.

I recorded an all time low pressure here this morning (in the time ive been recording) of 948mb, been holding steady around 949mb for the last 6 hours.  Did drop briefly to 948 again at 10 though.

Never got as much rain overnight as i'd hoped, but still confident of breaking 300mm for the month.

It is raining just now and i am at 289mm for the month.

Edit - wrt the wind - nothing to write home about here, might pick up a bit later as the low moves away

On the pressure, it fell a tiny bit more here, the low was 945.8hPa at 09:10 today. On the rise now, up to the dizzying height of 949.5hPa now

Seems to be a bit of confusion about this "102mph" reading at Aberdaron earlier:

"I've been chatting to the Met Office, who have been filling me in on the wet and blustery conditions to come later this week, but before I get to that a word on maximum wind speeds. We mentioned earlier that there had been a recorded wind gust of more than 100mph.

That was, the Met Office says, a recording of 102mph at a weather station in Aberdaron, north Wales. However, a spokeswoman says that has yet to be confirmed and technicians are checking the instruments as it is a far higher reading than recorded nearby. The Aberdaron station is at an elevation of 95m, and a nearby station at a more exposed 216m saw a maximum gust of 87mph. So, it might not have been a 100mph storm."

I guess it's an issue with station location and the nature of gust speeds plus the fact the MO apply very strict citeria to their readings, and rightly so. Most of us amateurs can't get close, but spot readings give an idea of intensity at that location. There is a big difference between 87mph and 102mph so something seems a bit strange....especially since the 87 reading was from a "more exposed" location.

One thing is for sure....87mph is wild enough!
