Pressure was low anyway, but now falling rapidly. After a high of 986.4hPa @ 11am we are at 966.9hPa and falling rapidly. Breezy, blowing gale 8 and gusting 53mph or severe gale 9.

Similar theme here. The calm here was very quickly replaced with gusty winds that far outdo anything we've experienced so far this winter. It's going to be a noisy night!

Can hear the wind picking up markedly the last few minutes, there's a big field to my south with no houses to block the wind and the wind is coming from that direction.

This system is really a non event up here. For us we may see some strongish winds (60mph) on the leading edge tonight or early tomorrow morning, though the only real interest is the low pressure reading. Looks to be around 950hPa, perhaps a touch lower tomorrow, which is low, especially given the 939hPa we had yesterday / xmas eve.

As for December wind speeds, to date (including todays readings so far) only 4 days have seen peak gusts < 50mph. 5 days with peak gusts > 80mph including Christmas Eve. Christmas day just missed out with a peak gust of 79.4mph.

After today things looks to be setting down to something far more like average. December traditionally is windy with a few storm systems for us. But Dec 2013 has been an exceptionally stormy even by NW Scotland standards. I just hope Jan - which is normally much more stormy than December is calmer than average

Take care in the rain and gales due later tonight and tomorrow folks.

Wind really picking up here right now, gusting 25mph in the garden which is fairly sheltered, the rain isn't so hard but whats coming down certainly drives into you.

Sounds like my dad talking about the world war 2 without the wine and cake of course

Judy D, from Broad Oak, near Rye in East Sussex, has been without power since Monday, and as her house is entirely dependent on electricity she has "no shower, no hot water, no heat, no light, no television, no radio, no internet access".

Describing her Christmas dinner she said: "We made some toast on the wood burner, and we've got a little camping ring for tea and coffee so we had some scrambled egg, and we had a glass of wine with it and some chocolate cake for pudding. And very nice it was too."

What I have found fascinating is the speed in which the winds have picked up, nearly dead calm earlier and now roaring outside my window.
