Rumbles of thunder have now started Caz, some flashes just recently.  The sky really does look particularly threatening now to the SW.

And just had a much closer strike!  No rain as yet though.

It seems to be a fairly wide band as it's spread from Gainsborough to Nottingham at the same time. We had a few spots of rain that barely wet the ground but it's stopped again.

Lightning seems to have died down now but now we have torrential rain!

Still some rumbles of thunder ongoing though.

Just had a look on the lightning map and the storm seems to be moving East.  It's fresher here now but the sky is saying not to rule out more thunder.

It's all calm here for the moment and the mugginess is back, so there maybe more to come. I'm off to watch the sky from my bedroom window. Hope more of you get a bit of the action!

Met Office regional forecast at 9pm is laughable.

Any remaining thunderstorms will clear eastwards this evening.....

Do they not look at their own radar and lightning detectors?

Also exposes a flaw in the warning system. No need for this region to be under warning til 2am now.

Finally calming down here also.  It certainly ended in style though, briefly there was some of the heaviest rain I've seen for a few years.  It's actually the first proper storm we've had for 2 years.   Picked up 11mm of rain in 30 minutes.

Looks like there's been some really big storms going into Southern Lincs.

We didn't get anything else overnight but there was much activity to my East from Newark into Lincolnshire.  We do well here for storms although we only got a few negligible spots of rain last night, so farmers here will still be irrigating fields as it's been a very dry season.

I miss my summer thunderstorms Caz. Notts is well placed. Experienced a lot when I lived in Newark. Storms are much rarer up here. I'll just read your reports instead!

I think thunderstorm forecasts might be even more crap and unreliable than snow forecasts can be. Extremely difficult to nail

Has it become more "difficult" for thunder to occur these days for the UK or for parts of it?

177 days with thunder was recorded at Manchester Airport in the 1990s. Could have been exceptional the 90s for the Manchester area for thunder but since 2010, thunder has really declined. From very early August 2014 to the end of June 2015, there was no thunder at all. 2010 and 2011 totals combined comes to only 5 days of thunder.

Could cleaner air these days have something to do with it? I read somewhere that the more polluted the air is the higher the clouds grew due to the water droplets being smaller and these were more likely to freeze to ice crystals (which you need for charge separation) because of the extra cloud height. The lack of any major volcanic activity in recent years? I remember 1982/83 being very thundery years following on from the Mt St. helens eruption in 1980 and the major eruption of El Chichon in 1982.

Another possibility is a change in weather patterns and the possibility that the Azores high is more often displaced further north in the Atlantic - maybe due to a global rise in temperatures.

But if you use the theory of volcanoes, we had the Icelandic volcano in April 2010 that shut down our's and Europe's sky. We had a lot of ash in the air, yet 2010 was one of the poorest thunder years in a long time. The only storms for my area came in September: a small on early on in the month, then a decent one on the 23rd.

Maybe the synoptics weren't right at those times lol but the fickleness of thundery activity means that all ingredients have to be in place and often it's a lottery! So many variables

Edit: Didn't we have a gentle northerly/NW feed bringing down that ash? Not the best direction conducive to thunderstorms!
