Another thing, I'm struggling to remember is the last time we had a day with more than one thunderstorm? What I mean is a thundery shower or storm then an interval followed by another one.

I recall a few occasions in the 90s this happening. Late June 1990, we had three separate thunderstorms/thundery showers, one Saturday afternoon and evening, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995... Some of these occasions, we had a storm some time in the morning and another in the late afternoon/evening or night.

These days, we get one storm and that's it, we don't get a second bite of the cherry.

Only one instance of that I can remember. A day in late July 2013 had two thundery showers, followed by a larger thunderstorm.

Other than that, not really anything.

Which means the figures are even worse for recent times compared to past periods. Some of those days in the 1990s were multiple thunder events but only recorded as 1 day of thunder.

Yes we are well placed for storms as you say and they're not always frontal storms. We have a nack for generating our own convection and I'm no expert but I'd say it's due to having the height of the Penines to the near West and the flatlands of Lincolnshire to the East.

So close but so far!  I wondered if you might have been on the Western edge and got a bit of thunder Duane. Judging by the radar there were three or four cells that veered East to the Lincolnshire coast. I think the cell at Nottingham was separate to the one we got the edge of.

The above shows thunder averages 1971 to 2000. SE to NW gradient . I.e where there is heat there is thunder.
Ironically a darker spot around Buxton ish area indicating more thunder than the surrounding areas during those 30 years anyway.

That anomaly may be due to the fact that there is a 100+ mile stretch of the Irish Sea that an unstable WNW airstream can flow over - in recent years I've noticed that flow has not been so common. Back in 2012 I recorded 19 days with thunder heard - often from frequent unstable flows in from that direction through the Cheshire Gap.  2015 saw just 5 days,  2016 was much better with 14 days and this year so far there have been just 2 days! One of those two was a distant rumble from a graupel shower in April, that moved across from the NW and the other was from a brief storm that moved overhead from the south on the 27th May.

There are some suspicious looking clouds forming. Has anyone got thunder?

It has been overcast all morning here at Kentshire, but now seeing bits of blue sky with some big cumulus already breaking through the cap of cloudy clag.

Quite a number of towers going up around me now which is quite concerning as it's not supposed to rain here, and I'm out in the sticks without waterproofs and camera.

Just been watching a nice tower go up to the north of here. Formed a little 3 deck plius over it then just ploughed right on up through it.

There are no lightning strikes anywhere near us according to the latest rain radar map, but we have a real, torrential downpour going on just now here in Edinburgh. I always knew that we would have a cold front moving through tonight, but this cold front is obviously proving to be more lively than what it was forecast to be. This of course, just sums up the really miserable summer which we are continuing to experience here in Edinburgh and with so much going on in this part of the world just now, I am surprised that this thread is so quite just now.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

As you say Jonn, there is no lightning showing on the map but when there is, this thread will be very busy.  I guarantee!

The amazing thing about that as well, is that this is happening along what was described as recently as last night on the BBC, as a 'weak' weather front. That in itself tells you, that you can't really rely on the BBC to give you a decent and reliable forecast.

Reasonable potential for storms from overnight Tuesday to early Thursday. First risk is associated with trough following warm front overnight Tuesday which moves north, behind which in a unstable airmass other disturbances come into play.
