Meant to say as well that both June and July had 23 days of rain (0.1mm+)

Now that's something to moan about

yes, it is rather gloomy as we remain firmly within our usual permacast gloom although the Sun was shining in dribs and drabs earlier on this morning even when it was raining. Luckily, it's not raining just now but in recent days, I can only actually remember one day which started off with a bright and sunny morning and even that then led us into a miserable afternoon as yet another Atlantic weather system rolled in from the west, and every single day of this month so far has at the very least, had at least one miserable part to it with some rain. That to me, is yet another indication of this very sad and sorry state of this so-called 'summer'.

Still hoping this Azores High makes it next week and sticks around till at least the end of August early September, dont need heatwaves but settled, sunny, mid 20's would be nice. Probably lots of wishful thinking !

If it's not raining this summer, we will still be mostly to be seeing constant grey skies and that is what is happening just now. The BBC forecasts this morning had said that the weather would turn much brighter here during the day with more in the way of sunshine, with the showers mostly being concentrated in the far north and north-east of Scotland.

Instead of that though, the grey skies have stuck around all day and we have yet more drizzly stuff at times along with a cool wind. To me, it therefore seems as though autumn has come really early this year after this so-called 'summer' which has never really happened in this part of the world and which has therefore, ended up being virtually a complete non-event.

It’s not much better down here now to be honest. It feels like a long time ago since we saw a dry day.

What I noticed is that during early summer, down in the south, the weather often turned out better than was forecast. More recently it has consistently been worse than forecast. “Mostly dry with sunny spells” has often been “Mainly cloudy with showers” in reality.

I remember when I was a lad, one of the weather books I had stated that for each day it rains, it is statistically more likely to rain again the next day. I always struggled to understand that because I wondered if that meant it could just rain every day for ever! Some parts of the UK might think that’s what we’ve reached now 🙂 .

I expect a lot of that theory is around getting stuck in a particular pattern of weather. Also, the increased moisture in the ground and therefore the atmosphere due to evaporation, means that rain is more likely to fall.

Today's weather has just got even worse as the day has progressed since that drizzle from earlier on ended up turning into heavier rain and apart from a very brief break from that just a short while ago, this rain has been rather persistent throughout the afternoon. This in turn has meant that what was supposed to to be a day of sunshine and a few scattered showers according to the forecast, has ended up leading us into yet another miserable afternoon in this part of the world.

That once again is yet another part of this really miserable summer which we have had to endure with what is turning out to one of the worst ever starts to any August which I can remember in my lifetime. Just like in June which ended up being even worse than the same month in both of those washout summers of 2007 and 2012, this month must surely be at least on a par with the August of one or both of those really miserable summers so far, especially as things were starting to dry up slightly towards the end of those summers with Atlantic weather systems becoming that bit weaker.

Sat and watched Steve Wright deliver his excellent afternoon show in the BBC tent at the festival. Audience all wrapped up in wet coats from queuing, I could have done with my winter coat and gloves! Anyway back home, heating on for a bit. A truly awful summer 😣

Jerry, you're not missing much in Notts either.  This week has been more like October but without the autumn leaf colour.

Michael Fish over at Netweather (yes, that is the same Michael Fish who we all remember from his time with the BBC all of those years ago) isn't even offering the same optimism for high pressure building from the west towards the latter part of next week for any length of time, that is being seen at the moment by the shorter term GFS and ECM models which are both predicting that to happen, even here in Scotland.

According to that forecast, this coming weekend and the beginning of next week is still unsettled. This forecast suggests that we might get a very brief window of better weather during the latter part of next week, but only before it all goes downhill again by the following weekend.

In any case, I am always very cautious of what the models are saying anyway, and that includes the so-called more reliable shorter term models especially since it wasn't that long ago that all of the models were predicting a spell of really good weather during the second half of July at around the time when I went on my own break down in the Scottish Borders.

Of course, we all know what actually ended up happening and in fact, that same period which was supposed to give us that really good weather, ended up giving us that washout weekend which was the worst weekend of the entire month in terms of our weather.

That means that for me, summer is well and truly over despite what the models might be saying, not that it ever really got going in this part of the world this year, anyway.

Here in Fulham, London early August is truly turning into a dreadful start with cool temperatures, incessant wind, and little sun. Today August 4th temperature just climbed to 20 degrees with the outlook for next week for more of the same.. If anything this coming weekend is projected to be cooler still with a maximum of 19 degrees........ Summer really seems to be over for now and into mid August, however I would love to be proven otherwise....

For now at least, but how long will that last before we end up with the familiar grey skies once again later on with possibly some more heavy showers or longer spells of rain?

The last time that we had a sunny morning, it was miserable by the afternoon and that was with what was actually an even sunnier morning than what we have just now (there is still quite a lot of cloud around, even now).

Hasn’t been that good lately but not bad either. Managed to sit out in the garden at some point every day from the 26th of July until Thursday. Awful day yesterday though with the wind switch to NW, which nowadays is even worse than an easterly in summer as far as I’m concerned.

Today just more dire, cloudy summer weekend dross. Not a single Saturday since the start of July has managed more than 6 hours sun, something that could be achieved even in December. An absolute disgrace of a summer once again. June will actually go down as the best month in my perception due to the sunny weekends as since the start of July it has just reverted to the godawful type of the last decade with the best days always during the week

Sick to death of enduring this rubbish and never getting the equivalent from the other end of the spectrum to balance it out. It beggars belief that it is now 11 years since 24C was reached in August. An unprecedented situation. Not even the 60s were so dismal for lack of warmth with 26.8C achieved in August 1964.

What’s needed more than anything though is a settled spell and some decent weekend weather.

Somehow, I didn't think that this morning's sunshine would last long as the convective clouds have now built up and the showers have now arrived. So far, there is nothing too heavy on that front to report, but it looks as though it may well be a different story later on this afternoon and into this evening. In any case, this now means that we have now had at least some rain at some point of every single one of the last 11 days in a row (as Jerry would no doubt confirm), and so our increasingly long wait for that elusive completely dry day goes on.

According to the forecasts as well, we might still have a while to wait for that as well because the forecast isn't looking too great for tomorrow with rain expected to arrive during tomorrow as the next Atlantic weather system moves in from the west, leaving us with a return to that all too familiar showery outlook for the early part of next week at least.
