Thought it was time to kick off a summer 2017 moaning thread, particularly in light of what is to come over the next 7-10 days.

I will start it off by saying it's typical that the jet fires up almost bang on cue for the start of summer.

I hope this is just the standard "return of the westerlies" and that the 0z GFS.is onto something from mid month onwards.

As has been said elsewhere we need to front up to the fact that the next week or so is looking pretty poor.

The forecast Netweather have given me for Tuesday...

Maybe if you changed that date to say "Tue 06th Jan" it would be more in place.

The past few days have done nothing except show how June is the most dismal and depressing month of the year. Absolutely pathetic start to summer.

Today started glorious but already the crap has set in and it's gone from sun and a high of 16.4C at 10am to just 11.7C and rain now. Vile

Worse still, the outlook makes the last few days seem like paradise. Looks like there will be more chance of Jeremy Corbyn winning a majority on Thursday than there being a dry day before the middle of the month.

Suffice to say if these stupidly awful rain totals http://wxmaps.org/pix/prec4.html are anywhere near to accurate, this summer will already be past the point of no return before the first half of June is over. Another terrible wet summer to add to the nine we’ve already suffered since 2007

Well to coin a phrase from Richard in Aberdeen today has been an absolutely rancid puke inducing day. More like late October than June and no end in sight. June may well be a write off.

I too am well pigged off with this weather, been the same the last 3yrs here on the east coast...mild winters, cold springs then crappy summers, summer weather patterns in winter then winter ones as soon as we get to 'summer'...not only is it very annoying but the summer wildlife is getting decimated year on year due to unseasonal temps/weather...not good...!

It's hard to believe that it wasn't all that long ago when we were talking about a drought with possible water shortages, and a possible hosepipe ban in England during this summer. Edinburgh had its driest April on record and even when the rain finally arrived in England, we still struggled to get much of that here in Edinburgh as we went on to yet another drier than average month in May. Now, this morning is really abysmal here in Edinburgh with a lot of rain which is forecast to continue for the rest of the day, and with a very poor forecast for the rest of the week.

It therefore seems as though, the rain now just doesn't want to stop now that it has finally arrived and for those of us who want to see a decent summer, that is not exactly what we want to be seeing just now although it does show just how quickly, things can change with even the most recent weather events being quickly forgotten as a result. At the same time, it also wasn't long ago since we were basking in temperatures up into the upper 20s centigrade on a day which was described by another member from the Morningside area of Edinburgh, as the hottest day in Edinburgh since 2013.

What this does though, is remind us of what happened six months earlier when we had a cold November (though not on the scale of what we had in 2010, and not one which had anything in the way of snowfall) only for that to then, end up being more or less it for our winter. The remind why I was reminded of that time is because I am now wondering whether or not, the same thing is now happening with the summer, especially given that previously dry weather and that really hot weather which we had during May.

It that is the case (and I haven't come here to declare that summer is over because it is early days, and a lot could change from now on), it could well be the case that we have actually already had our summer for this year, although I'm obviously hoping that that isn't the case and that we can still go on to get some decent summer weather at least. Given the nature of our weather, it wouldn't surprise me at all if that ended up happening. Furthermore, nature always has its ways of balancing everything out in the end and so, all of that dry weather was always going to end up being balanced in the end by a spell of really wet weather, possibly with a lot of flooding.

For those of us who want to see a decent summer (which I am myself, in that in that camp), right now is not the time when we want to be seeing that happening. So far, there hasn't thankfully been any flooding anywhere that I know of, but I am wondering if this balancing act is now underway because if it is, I can only really see a very poor and miserable summer ahead which is not the sort of prediction that I want to be making.

Today is certainly a flashback to the first week of June 2012. I remember 3 June 2012 being exactly like today (cold, wet and windy), and it is the only June day I've ever recorded that had a single fingure maximum. Though that won't be the case today, it certainly does have me concerned for the forseeable future.

Hopefully the models might be right and we'll see high pressure build through around mid-month.

I don't mind a nice drop of rain as the lawn could use it, it's just the strong wind that is making it feel more cold and miserable than it really need to be.

Absolutely repellent day of pure and utter poison. Not even a week of this ghastly summer up and already clear it’s going to be yet another dud

Rain every day with a filthy 33.8mm so far today taking the total to 42.4mm already. Dyce has had even more due to catching heavier showers over the weekend. Normally you would expect one inch plus day in a year, usually in autumn, but this is already the third this year and this is on top of four last year

Last year the wettest day was in June when the 15th turned out to be the wettest June day since 1935 with a toxic 47.4mm falling. One year on it’s just more of the same with this month looking odds on to join last June, 2007 and 2012 in the top 10 wettest since 1856.

No end in sight so possible today could end up beating last year's total or even the 54.4mm record from 5/6/35. Pretty much no question these will be the wettest pair of Junes on record. Last year was actually reasonably decent up to the 6th so this horror show has a head start.

June is now a truly vile month that is the worst month of the year and the one month I wish could be cut out of the calendar completely. A month of unremitting crap with relentless N and E winds year in year out. Even last December – the dullest in over a decade – was more pleasant than this steaming pile of excrement has been in the majority of recent years.

The stats speak for themselves. No month has changed as much as June.

1920-1970: 190hrs sun, 55mm rain
1971-2006: 175 hrs sun, 56mm rain
2007-2016: 145 hrs sun, 77mm rain

It has gone from being the sunniest month of the year to dullest in % terms and probably after this year will end up below even March to have the least sunshine of any month between March and August in absolute terms as well.

Summer here is worse than even Shetland now. 145hrs is about their average June sunshine but their rainfall is nowhere near as high as 77mm and they had over 200 hours sun last year, something that hasn’t been achieved here in June since 2003. A truly mind-blowing run of godawful Junes. October has been more summery over the past decade despite being mostly duller and wetter than average. That’s how bad this month has become

Shocking weather today. More like November than June. Lots of rain and just 11C at best. Strong winds have brought down many large branches and some trees. The road was partially blocked in two places on my way home. Leaves stripped from trees everywhere.

Yet another abysmally wet day here in Edinburgh within this horrendously miserable start to our so-called 'summer' which we are continuing to experience just now. Things may well improve next week and if we get that spell of good weather which the models are indicating, that will be something to look forward. I also haven't forgotten that this equivalent thread last year was known as the Moaning and Gloating thread rather than just the Moaning thread and so, you might find plenty of people gloating on this thread if that happens.

However, that still doesn't take anything from the fact that this summer so far is technically speaking, on course to join 2007 and 2012 on that list of horrendously wet summers which we have had in recent years, even if that isn't how it all ends up in the end. The fact of the matter is that we have had so much rain this week that even if the rest of this month is bone dry with lots of scorching sunshine, that won't now be enough to prevent this month from going down as a statistically wetter than average month due to what has been happening this week.

That in turn, does not make for a very good start to the summer and although this doesn't necessarily mean that this will end up being a poor summer overall, this is not the kind of start to this summer which most people would have been looking for. It is hard to believe that it wasn't long ago that I was making a number of contributions to the Drought thread.

At this rate, it might therefore end up not being a bad idea to think about starting a Flooding thread in order to complement that, if the weather fails to improve in the manner in which the models are suggesting, and if this weather keeps on going for any length of time.

I am apoplectic with rage. This atrocious summer is even worse than 2007 or 2012. No words can do it justice. It is the most repulsive start to a summer within living memory

Barely got any sleep on Tuesday night due to the grotesque wind and rain. Rain total for the first week well over the whole month average at 61.8mm, with Tuesday turning out the 4th wettest June day on record less than a year on from the 3rd wettest.

Flooding misery in the NE yet again:

https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/news/local/flooding-devastates-homes-aberdeenshire-village/

As if this wasn’t horrific enough, today brought more of the vile, unwanted and unnecessary wet stuff making 8/8 days with rain this month. A further 5.2mm so far with no let up. Getting heavier in fact. I endured a miserable walk back from work and still have to go to the polling station

It's also disgustingly cold  - just 9.7C at the moment and went down to 2C overnight with air frost inland. However these conditions are so putrid that temperature is completely academic.

When the hell are we going to start seeing a long overdue run of dry summers/years? The idea that this can be tolerated year in year out is just beyond ridiculous

Awful start to June. Saw quite a bit today of what would be described as 'localised flooding'. This initially surprised me as this morning's rain wasn't particularly heavy or prolonged. Then I realised that it was due to blocked drains full of all those leaves that were ripped off the trees on Tuesday.
