It's hard to believe that it wasn't all that long ago when we were talking about a drought with possible water shortages, and a possible hosepipe ban in England during this summer. Edinburgh had its driest April on record and even when the rain finally arrived in England, we still struggled to get much of that here in Edinburgh as we went on to yet another drier than average month in May. Now, this morning is really abysmal here in Edinburgh with a lot of rain which is forecast to continue for the rest of the day, and with a very poor forecast for the rest of the week.
It therefore seems as though, the rain now just doesn't want to stop now that it has finally arrived and for those of us who want to see a decent summer, that is not exactly what we want to be seeing just now although it does show just how quickly, things can change with even the most recent weather events being quickly forgotten as a result. At the same time, it also wasn't long ago since we were basking in temperatures up into the upper 20s centigrade on a day which was described by another member from the Morningside area of Edinburgh, as the hottest day in Edinburgh since 2013.
What this does though, is remind us of what happened six months earlier when we had a cold November (though not on the scale of what we had in 2010, and not one which had anything in the way of snowfall) only for that to then, end up being more or less it for our winter. The remind why I was reminded of that time is because I am now wondering whether or not, the same thing is now happening with the summer, especially given that previously dry weather and that really hot weather which we had during May.
It that is the case (and I haven't come here to declare that summer is over because it is early days, and a lot could change from now on), it could well be the case that we have actually already had our summer for this year, although I'm obviously hoping that that isn't the case and that we can still go on to get some decent summer weather at least. Given the nature of our weather, it wouldn't surprise me at all if that ended up happening. Furthermore, nature always has its ways of balancing everything out in the end and so, all of that dry weather was always going to end up being balanced in the end by a spell of really wet weather, possibly with a lot of flooding.
For those of us who want to see a decent summer (which I am myself, in that in that camp), right now is not the time when we want to be seeing that happening. So far, there hasn't thankfully been any flooding anywhere that I know of, but I am wondering if this balancing act is now underway because if it is, I can only really see a very poor and miserable summer ahead which is not the sort of prediction that I want to be making.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
