Warm spring confirmed then

The irony of it

"The Met Office’s 30-day forecast warns of the risk of a prolonged cold spell during the start of Spring." and right on cue the met office dropped that line from the LFR as you can see above

A BIT rich coming from Jay Wynne's forecast. - Finally we may get an easterly and for some time' or as the met office have said this is the chance of a "Prolonged cold spell developing more widely with snow in places" etc

Met office update

UK Outlook for Wednesday 8 Mar 2017 to Friday 17 Mar 2017:

Probably remaining changeable through to the middle of March with showers or longer spells of rain at times, these occasionally heavy. However, there will also be some drier and clearer interludes. Most areas likely to see some wet spells through the first few days of the period. It will also be windy at times with gales in exposed areas, mainly in the west. Further rain is also likely later next week in the north where some snow is possible over higher ground. A more settled spell is expected across the south and east. Temperatures will be around normal, occasionally turning mild, particularly in the south, and perhaps rather cold at times in the north, with some overnight frosts too.

UK Outlook for Saturday 18 Mar 2017 to Saturday 1 Apr 2017:

The changeable conditions look set to continue through the rest of March, though there is low confidence in the detail. Colder, showery spells are likely to be interspersed with milder, more generally wet periods, and some prolonged drier spells too. There is also likely to be a wide variation in temperatures. There is potential for a period of colder temperatures around the middle of the month, with more in the way of frosts and perhaps snow, especially in the north, before turning milder later.

Met office update

UK Outlook for Thursday 9 Mar 2017 to Saturday 18 Mar 2017:

An unsettled theme looks likely until the middle of March. Bands of rain will cross the UK with more showery and bright interludes probable in between. The heaviest rain is expected in western and north-western areas with wintry showers likely over higher ground. The unsettled weather could also bring windy spells with gales in exposed places. Temperatures are thought to be around average; perhaps milder in the southeast, but all areas could get colder as we go through the period with more of a northerly influence. This period could bring snow for a time even to lower levels in the north; with the best of the dry weather further southwest where it could feel much more settled. Overnight frosts could also feature nationwide through the middle of March.

UK Outlook for Sunday 19 Mar 2017 to Sunday 2 Apr 2017:

Initially a rather cold northerly influence is the probable scenario, and feeling generally more settled, especially in the south, however longer spells of rain stay more likely in the north and east. Towards the end of March there is a degree of uncertainty, but there is some evidence in favour of a more settled spell of weather. This could bring drier-than-average conditions, with temperatures probably around average for late March, however the confidence for this set-up is low.

Is there any point in newspapers publishing weather forecasts? It`s a lovely sunny day here (so far) with current temp of 11.5C. Yet this morning`s Daily Telegraph forecast says "NW England, Lake District, IoM, Cent N England and NE England.  Spells of rain today, becoming dry tonight."

I wonder who provides their forecasts?

Not sure who provides their forecasts but some of them are so basic that I wouldn't be surprised if they just made it up themselves. In any case, print forecasts are often out of date as soon as they are published.

I think the UKMO are the best and their current extended outlook looks fairly spot on when we see the current model output. Trending colder next weekend and through mid month. Beyond that time frame will always be of low confidence, regardless of the source.

"FREEZESTER HOL Britain is set to face an ARCTIC Easter with bone-chilling temperatures of MINUS 8C as ‘polar vortex’ sends icy winds ahead of THREE months of mad weather

Expect mad weather for the next three months with Atlantic gales in March, Polar snow in April and a heatwave for May

BRITAIN is facing an Arctic Easter next month with temperatures of MINUS 8C. A “polar vortex” will send icy winds from the far north in the run-up to Easter Sunday, the Met Office warns. Snow is also expected as part of a mad three months of weather. Forecasters say Atlantic gales will batter Britain until late March, with 50mph gusts due in the South from Monday. Councils, transport bosses and emergency services have also been briefed to expect snow and sub-zero temperatures around Easter Sunday on April 16.

Cold April spells have seen -5C to -11C in each of the past five years, Met Office records show. The ‘polar vortex’ – the North Pole’s dominant low pressure – is forecast to weaken, meaning high pressure would block mild westerly winds and allow cold air to hit Britain. However, the heat could be on in May — with temperatures set to hit 26C.Hot spells are expected due to warm continental air arriving thanks to high pressure ‘blocking.’ May has seen highs of 24C to 31C in each of the past five years, Met Office records show. May is expected to be so warm that much-warmer-than-usual temperatures are eight times more likely than much-colder-than-average over the next three months - even taking into account the April chill, the Met Office said.

Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Don't put your winter coat away. "There is an increased risk of snow ahead. “But there is an increasing chance of warmer spells later in spring, with warmer-than-average conditions likely in May and a good deal of sunshine.”

The Met Office three-month forecast said: “There is an increased likelihood of mild, wet and windy conditions for the UK in this early part of the outlook period. “A weak stratospheric polar vortex could influence late March and April. "This leads to a moderate increase in the chances of cold weather.

“March to May forecasts show influence from blocked conditions.

"By May, blocking tends to bring warmer weather.

“Overall, March to May overall has an increased chance of above-normal temperatures.”

Monthly Outlook

Summary

Spring has sprung

We're now into meteorological spring which began on the first of March as it does every year. We use whole months to make it easier for statistical analysis of the seasons. Through this month we will also enter astronomical spring which begins with the vernal equinox, this year falling on March 20th. Whichever definition of spring you prefer, it's a season which always brings tricky conditions for weather forecasters as we shift from chilly wintry weather towards summer. This transition usually brings us very changeable weather with a heady mix of wind, rain, sunshine, hail showers and even the odd bit of snow.
As we head through March we can expect plenty of unsettled weather with some strong wind and rain for most of us. The latter stages of the month should see things calm down with drier weather on the way.

Monday 6 March—Sunday 12 March

Low pressure systems marching on

This week will start on a dry note for many with light winds and sunny spells. There will be a few showers around across the country but the main exception to this pleasant Monday will be across southwest England and to a lesser extent southwest Wales where heavy rain and strong winds will move in through the morning. This rain will eventually clear in the afternoon leaving a little early evening brightness. Northern Ireland will have a reversal of Cornish fortunes with a dry start but rain moving in later.
Tuesday sets the tone for the rest of the week with a low pressure system running in from the Atlantic. Strong winds will push a band of rain across the country from west to east with some hill snow for Scotland and northern England but also some mild temperatures further south. Once the rain has cleared from Scotland and Northern Ireland, the winds will shift north-westerly and strengthen bringing gale force gusts and showers to the northwest, some of which will be wintry. Further south the rain will take it's time to clear, lingering across southern counties of England and Wales into Thursday.
Thursday brings with it another low pressure system from the Atlantic following a very similar pattern to that of Tuesday's low although perhaps not as windy at first. It looks as though this low pressure system will hang around into Friday with strengthening winds and continuing the unsettled feel into the weekend.

Monday 13 March—Sunday 19 March

Turning chilly

Through the middle of March we keep the theme for unsettled weather going. We're likely to see bands of rain moving across the country from west to east accompanied by strong winds and occasionally some snow for the hills and mountains of northern Britain. The heaviest rain will be focussed on the northwest and driest condition the southeast although everyone will see rain at some point. Temperatures at the start of the week will be average for early spring but later we should see our winds develop a more northerly trend which will bring temperatures down somewhat.

Monday 20 March—Sunday 2 April

Slowly settling down a bit

The generally cold northerly trend to the weather continues for a time approaching the end of the month but the unsettled theme, which we will have got fairly used to by this point, does not. With high pressure beginning to make its influence felt the weather looks like becoming drier and possibly brighter too. If this scenario happens then we should see temperatures recovering and getting back to the average for late March too. As with any transition between types of weather the timings of this are subject to some uncertainty at this stage and confidence remains low for now. We'll have more on this for you next week.

Next week

Do we have April showers on the way?

BBC monthly outlook

UK Outlook for Saturday 11 Mar 2017 to Monday 20 Mar 2017:

A changeable theme looks likely until the middle of March. From the middle of the month, there are signals for more settled weather to dominate, at least initially, although there is still the potential for showers, particularly in the north-west.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 21 Mar 2017 to Tuesday 4 Apr 2017:

There are signals for the second half of March and into early April to see some kind of blocked patterned at least initially. This means there are signs for generally drier than average conditions and more settled weather across the country. However, there is still the potential for showers and longer spells of rain at times, particularly in the north-west. Temperatures look to be around average for the time of year.
