I have been doing some analysis of the data which I have obtained from the Gogarbank site in Edinburgh (since that is the site which is used for my actual location by the BBC) for this summer, as a resulted of having just signed up with weatheronline. In particular, the important thing which I am pointing here is the rainfall figures.
The average rainfall for Gogarbank is 61.5 mm in June, 64.1 mm in July and 67.8 mm in August. That means that in an average summer, we can expect see the total rainfall amount to 193.4 mm. of course, no season or month ever gives a figure which is exactly equal to the average, that we would expect something close to those values during a typical summer.
For this summer though, we had 164.4 mm of rain in June followed by another 69.4 mm of rain during July. Gogarbank wasn't the station here in Edinburgh where the record was set for the wettest ever June, but the figure which is quoted here is still representative of how things actually turned out.
Given just how wet June was, both July and August put together, had to produce less then 29 mm of rain in total in order for this to still be a drier than average summer. That is an average of 14.5 mm per month over those two months which is only a small fraction of the actual averages for those two months. This effectively meant that both July and August had to be virtually bone dry in order for this to still be a drier than average summer.
However, we ended up with a slightly wetter than average July (as shown above) with well above that 29 mm which I mentioned above, and this confirmed that before we even got into August, we now officially had a wetter than average summer which would now be the case, regardless of what happened during this month.
So far this month, we have had a further 23 mm of rain up until the end of yesterday and on top of that, we have already had a brief shower of rain this morning ahead of the main area of rain which is expected to be with us later on. I have already written more extensively about this month's rainfall so far, and you can read that here over on the August Precipitation Watch thread. That will show you just how bad this month has been so far and with most of this month still to go, that just tells you the sad and sorry tale of this so-called 'summer'.
Edit:
It has now started raining yet again since I first wrote this post, and that just sums up how vile this pathetic excuse for a 'summer' has turned out to be.
