Looks like another really poor summer for thunder for the Greater Manchester area. I can't see much happening now til the end of the meteorological summer.

We had torrential showers on Thursday but they were no sferics, today, the showers in the south have a good deal of sferics.

Another appalling day in edinburgh 😞 - have we mentioned how rubbish summer has been here. Never mind being over - that would suggest it got started.

At the moment it's absolute stair rods outside my house, inch or so in every bucket and container in my garden since this morning - no doubt gogarbank will record 0.6mm.

Half my garden is now mushroom corner thanks to the continually damp weather, having to pick them out between showers before the kids or cat get to them :-(

whoa, there's my gutter overflowing...

No signs of anything like that though, in this part of Edinburgh where I am. In fact, the Sun has even come out here and at the moment, it has actually turning into quite a nice afternoon.

aye suns out now, the water running down the road and along the pavement glistening prettily :-)

suppose that's the nature of these showers, they drop their guts over one particular spot and have nothing left for next door to notice

Of course, I don't have any west-facing windows in my flat so I'm not really in a good position to see what is actually coming without going outside. This means that I wasn't able to spot in advance, this heavy shower which we have just had since my last post here, and which started not too long after I sent that post. However, this was nothing very torrential and this shower didn't even last for any length of time. I have therefore seen much heavier showers than that.

However, I have noticed some ominous looking clouds to my south, but those are moving away from here and that means that I have actually ended up missing out on the worst of that bad weather.

In the south of Edinburgh (Blackford) I can confirm that this mornings first downpour was torrential for a good 10 mins with water flowing down the street again. Since then the Cumulinimbus are small but still giving localised sudden downpours. Another kne here with enormous drops! Thunder confined to the eastern borders so far

I don't think it has been that bad here this summer.

Plenty of dry weekends.

Yesterday was a lovely day. :-)

Maybe it's just my perception!

Must have different weather in Higher Blackely lol. It has been far from  awful and yes been some nice days. Could have done with it being warmer though. Yeserday was gorgeous got to wear my vest for first time since June.

This joke of a summer continues to spit out its poison on a daily basis. Was meant to be a decent day but loads of cloud from the off and only sunny spells. After clocking up just 3 hours it seems to have clouded up completely. Even when the sun was out it only reached 16.8C and down to 15.7C now. Total crap for the warmest time of year Yesterday, which was meant to be a write-off, turned out better.

Just one mostly sunny weekend day out of 12 since the start of July. Absolutely pathetic and disgusting beyond words. Woeful even by the rock bottom standards of the past decade. Not a single dry weekend in the entirety of this foul and depressing sorry excuse for a summer.

3rd/4th June: 3.0mm

10th/11th June: 0.6mm

17th/18th June: 6.0mm

24th/25th June: Trace

1st/2nd July: 0.2mm

8th/9th July: 7.2mm

15th/16th July: 1.2mm

22nd/23rd July: 6.0mm

29th/30th July: Trace

5th/6th Aug: 0.6mm so far with more likely later.

Totally dire. It has become almost impossible to get a dry weekend over the last three years

I also have my fingers crossed that it's decent for Pride weekend. It is nearly always crap!

I have been doing some analysis of the data which I have obtained from the Gogarbank site in Edinburgh (since that is the site which is used for my actual location by the BBC) for this summer, as a resulted of having just signed up with weatheronline. In particular, the important thing which I am pointing here is the rainfall figures.

The average rainfall for Gogarbank is 61.5 mm in June, 64.1 mm in July and 67.8 mm in August. That means that in an average summer, we can expect see the total rainfall amount to 193.4 mm. of course, no season or month ever gives a figure which is exactly equal to the average, that we would expect something close to those values during a typical summer.

For this summer though, we had 164.4 mm of rain in June followed by another 69.4 mm of rain during July. Gogarbank wasn't the station here in Edinburgh where the record was set for the wettest ever June, but the figure which is quoted here is still representative of how things actually turned out.

Given just how wet June was, both July and August put together, had to produce less then 29 mm of rain in total in order for this to still be a drier than average summer. That is an average of 14.5 mm per month over those two months which is only a small fraction of the actual averages for those two months. This effectively meant that both July and August had to be virtually bone dry in order for this to still be a drier than average summer.

However, we ended up with a slightly wetter than average July (as shown above) with well above that 29 mm which I mentioned above, and this confirmed that before we even got into August, we now officially had a wetter than average summer which would now be the case, regardless of what happened during this month.

So far this month, we have had a further 23 mm of rain up until the end of yesterday and on top of that, we have already had a brief shower of rain this morning ahead of the main area of rain which is expected to be with us later on. I have already written more extensively about this month's rainfall so far, and you can read that here over on the August Precipitation Watch thread. That will show you just how bad this month has been so far and with most of this month still to go, that just tells you the sad and sorry tale of this so-called 'summer'.

Edit:

It has now started raining yet again since I first wrote this post, and that just sums up how vile this pathetic excuse for a 'summer' has turned out to be.

I don't really need to tell you what another awful day we are having up here, you will have probably guessed. 'Summer on hold' is the headline for the next week 😣 'Summer never came' it should read!

Unbelievable, another low set to track SW-NE and end up in the Nth Sea bringing cold northerlies with heavy rain for us here on the east coast by Tue, that'll be the third time this summer, same as last 2 summers...WTH...absolutely ridiculous...yet when we get to Nov/Dec you can guarantee there'll be a big Azores high with a mild SWly airstream...!!

Summer index is unimpressive, Joe and I don't see much improvement,  atm. Probably another "sub 200" summer for the index.

Can't complain too much about the weekend it stayed dry until 7pm on Sunday.
Had a BBQ on Saturday which was dry and sunny if on the cool side. Sunday morning was also nice with some pleasant sunshine Cool and sunny would sum it up.

According to Jay Wynne the Radio 4 5 day forecast for farmers this morning, the forecast is anything but settled for the whole week including next weekend. Tuesday and Wednesday are going to be horrendously cool and wet for much of England and Wales with supressed temperatures. Thursday will improve temporarily then its down hill from then on. I hope this forecast may be over the top but if his forecast is right there is no sign of an improvement as was originally the case forecasted in the last few days.
