Even the "good" winters usually only deliver 2 or 3 decent snow events to the majority of the UK population. It is a myth to think otherwise IMO. One of the things about 1978/79 was that it brought widespread snow (as opposed to localised or regional events) for the first time in a number of years. In my locality this spell will rank highly if cold and snow are your things because it has: i) lasted quite a long time, ii) delivered ice days iii) left a good covering of snow for several days.
For my area you could not expect more then what's happened 4 ice days in a row( so far) min of -9C 8-10cm of snow. For this location it's up there with the best of cold spells. I must admit it's turned out much better then I thought it would.
It has been an "excellent" spell of cold weather here too. A reasonable amount of snow (6cm to 7cm measured in my garden), several ice days, freezing fog, and contrasting light levels. For example, yesterday was overcast but this morning we've had bright sunshine. It ranks ahead of the cold snaps in Jan and Feb 2021, as well as December 2017. Although I'd put it behind the easterly in February / March 2018.
02 February 2009 ranks at the best and that came from a 3 day coke snap.
Well looking at the ENS for all models it is pretty clear anything can happen after the 22nd.
Yes, the midlands and Central Southern England have been dry, but this has still be a notable cold spell with temperatures sub zero by day in the first 14 days of December..
Quite a bit of central Southern England has had snow. Admittedly it was only a dusting here but the low temperatures mean that even two days later it is still there crunching underfoot and looking pretty with the Christmas decorations.
Best cold spell ever for me. Even better than Dec 2010.Truly wonderful. But now I will be accused of an "IMBY post" 😂
