It would be interesting to see what the max temps across the UK have been today.  It’s got gradually colder here from 20c at midnight to 14c now.   I’m guessing that’s due to the change of wind direction, the North Sea influence and the constant Tupperware sky (credit: Ian) we’ve had all day.

Given all the excellent information on here, I haven’t been at all surprised with the weather these past few days.  I’m expecting temps to start increasing here tomorrow though.

Yes, a max of 14°C here today, so very much on the cool side. Hopefully temperatures will reach average to maybe even a bit above in coming days if the low cloud from the North Sea stays away.

Same here!  20c at midnight, falling to 14c by this afternoon and it’s still 14c!

So with today's massive Met Office mishap via unforeseen stubbornness of cloud... given this is the UK we're talking about, you'd think such resilience would be assumed (!) - I jest of course - one wonders how tomorrow will play out as we have both low cloud dissipation rates and that North Sea breeze looking to cause trouble.

I believe that surface heating is the crucial factor that cuts down the cooling effect of the North Sea away from eastern coasts, by introducing vertical convection (hence turbulence and mixing), so the cloud is likely to be the bigger factor again in my opinion, despite a stronger starting flow off the North Sea than we had today.

There's not as much for the Met Office to lose this time, as their figures are a few lower than they put down for today, but today's cloud troubles have instilled a sense of wariness in me when it comes to expecting the mid-20s maximums that they've predicted.

Thu-Fri should see us free from the cloud issues, so that's when the vertical convection will really come into its own... and as a scientific fellow, I'm actually excited to see how that plays out!

Biggest day and region will be Thu in southern parts of England; mostly low 20s from the models versus high 20s to low 30s from the Met Office as per their longer-range video issued yesterday (anyone found a more recent video update looking that far ahead?).

I don't see why the met are getting stick here.

I watched an online forecast yesterday..

It was clearly stated that highs of 26C or 27C (with outside chance a little higher) were possible in the far southeast today with areas close to Kent coast most likely to see highest temperatures.

It was also saif that there were some uncertaintirs of how quick the cloud would clear.

Indeed it would appear in that sense they got it fairly right as its looking like east East Sussex will claim hotspot.

I think the usual TWO selective reading/hearing problem has hit again.

Where I am criticising them is that their video forecasts say one thing (30C+ on Thursday and Friday for the SE) whereas their online forecast output shows low 20s.

Their video forecasts were showing yesterday those kind of highs more south/southwest not southeast, but today they've toned it down a little.

Anyhow that had yet to happen unlike today where they have been criticised.

I agree with you!  I think they’ve got their online forecasts right but Rob’s right too. They simply haven’t been consistent and having different forecasts on different media outlets has caused confusion!

There are 2 problems: still plenty of cloud on Wed and then on Thu/Fri when that problem goes away as you say, the 1000-900 hPa wind is just too strong to allow the surface heating and vertical convection mechanism.

Surface temps on those 2 days could easily be 3C higher than raw model output, but nothing like the 30s that some people were expecting.

I understand your point but in West Yorks we have had a max of 13 C today with rain all day. This evening we have sheets of drizzle blowing in from the NE and dark by 9pm

It's hideous! Jumpers and waterproofs the order of the day today and this is the 4th dull day on the trot with below average temperatures

But the met in their videos that i watched never said it would be warm let alone hot under thr rain. 😊

Another dreadful max of only 12.8C today giving two days in a row more than 4C below average. Funny sort of heatwave this.

Of course that's nothing in this era of horrific summers in which the temperature is more likely to be close to record cold than record warm. Two years ago at the end of a record wet June there were maxes below 12C on both the 27th and 29th with the 30th recording below 13C and four years ago we had the latest single figure max for nearly 40 years on the 24th

I saw a forecast from them last night showing 23C up here but with cloud and light rain for the afternoon. My initial thoughts were absolutely no chance of temps that high.

The actual temp was just 14C during day light hours with a strong North wind. Not one to knock the met but they were way off today.

NE winds + sunshine in summer can bring upwards of 30C down here even with uppers of around 12C.

I think waa back around April we had NE winds and 18C under 0C uppers.. we were by a long shot UK hot spot.

And guess what? It's always under forecasted 😂

NE winds + sunshine in summer with uppers of around 18C.. hmm i wonder lol.
