Current extreme cold warning issued.  This for Toronto but it applies widely across Ontario and provinces east of there, out to the Maritimes.

Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:

  • City of Toronto

A prolonged period of very cold wind chills continues.

An Arctic ridge of high pressure continues to bring cold temperatures and brisk northwesterly winds to Southern Ontario. Windchill values are expected to continue from minus 35 in urban locations to minus 42 in rural areas this morning then continue in the minus 28 to minus 35 range from later this morning until Sunday morning. Many areas will likely remain in the Extreme Cold Warning until Sunday morning when conditions are expected to improve.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Check on older family, friends and neighbours.

Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.

If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming.

There is evidence here to suggest that the extreme cold wave has made its presence felt as far south as the tropics (21.8 degrees north) at Grace Bay.

Yesterdays max of less than 24c was accompanied by a strong and gusty WNW'ly airmass ! Truly amaxing.

Jacksonville at 4°C currently, with Miami at 12°C. The BBC has reported iguanas apparently falling from trees as they lose their grip on the ice.

Check out the satellite image. If anyone has seen 'The Day After Tomorrow' it looks like one of the 3 ultracold supercells that featured in that film.

Mount Washington looks even less hospitable than usual this morning with a temperature of -38°C and mean wind speed of 89mph currently, resulting in a windchill of -69°C. Combined with freezing fog and blowing snow it would feel somewhat on the cold side.

What is quite interesting for all those people that say how hard it is to shift cold, some places in and around great lakes who had -26c over weekend forecast to hit +13/14c by weds

They are not completely wrong given the context. High latitude blocking is the mechanism that tends to bring cold for the UK and that really is hard to shift once it becomes well established. In the US, however, extreme cold is caused not so much by high latitude blocking as a kink in the jet just moving really far south. To the west of the jet its much warmer than average and to the east much colder and as the jet tends to move from west to east dramatic upward shifts in temperature in the states are not that unusual (and vice versa).

Historical record change, from South Dakota

Spearfish holds the world record for the fastest recorded temperature change. On January 22, 1943 at about 7:30 a.m. MST, the temperature in Spearfish was −4°F (−20°C). The Chinook wind picked up speed rapidly, and two minutes later (7:32 a.m.) the temperature was +45 °F (+7 °C) above zero. The 49 °F or 27 °C rise in two minutes set a world record that still holds. By 9:00 a.m., the temperature had risen to 54 °F (12 °C). Suddenly, the chinook died down and the temperature tumbled back to −4 °F or −20 °C. The 58 °F or 32.2 °C drop took only 27 minutes.[17][18] The sudden change in temperatures caused glass windows to crack and windshields to instantly frost over
