Yes look at this - this is mid afternoon on Friday: - many parts some 10c hotter than many southern USA states like Louisiana, Missisipi, Alabama, Georgia or Florida!

Also look at the uppers: - All in Excess of +30c @ 850hpa - it's almost off the scale !

Looks like the extreme heat will even reach Winnipeg, Manitoba!

Many places in the Canadian Prairies will break the all time record high for sure!?

https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/mb-38_metric_e.html

How many days of +30c or above !? - Well two days could exceed +35c which is some 16c above the August average of +19c.

Now it's new York's turn:

35c is possible today and tomorrow - nothing that uncommon but the fact this summer has been quite wet and cooler for them will be a nice treat.

New York has not had a cooler (than average) summer. I was there and in the environs for a couple of weeks in July and while there were one or two very wet days it was generally very warm and mostly dry. Typically there was a funnel cloud in NYC the day after I left the city.

But in contrast to perhaps Canadian Prairies - or Mid west or western 2/3 rds of the USA - NYC hasn't really had a heatwave as such has it?

I didn’t suggest it had a heatwave only that it had not been cooler than average. The temperature in NYC over the past three months is running at around 1.5°C above average. So a warm if at times rather wet summer.

Edit: For reference this image is from near Valleyview (and the road didn’t look dissimilar when I drove it in midwinter a few years ago)

I'm watching this with mild apprehension - as I'll be out there in a fortnight, driving through the Rockies from Calgary to Vancouver. It came as quite a shock to see just how cold it is in Calgary at the moment, considering the mean high for early October is 15C, same as here in Kent.
