I think we can see where the cold is this winter.

Houston TX will see lows below freezing for five nights; last time that happened was 2010. They are also set to record the lowest temps in 21 years with a minimum of 19F in the city on Tuesday morning. Incredible for a city of humidity usually. Infact some areas won't rise above freezing for 48 hours.

Crazy! Also no one can predict the weather - looks like most of the southern states are some 15 to 20' below average - crazy given La Nina year and all predicted average to well above average temperatures for southern states.

Thought i'd share this:

I bet the models /LRF didn't predict this - again La Nina - drier than average which is what the south and the eastern USA currently have so far but not this extreme record breaking cold that they are experiencing right now!

Temperatures plummeted to almost 10f or -13c at Midnight in Times Square, NYC!

Just goes to show how useless all LFR (though Joe B for the US does rather well ) are.

Exactly - we are talking weeks of daytime maxes of -5c to -8c and Night time minimums of -10 to -15c in the big apple:

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/new-york-ny/10007/daily-weather-forecast/349727

On the plus side -= they are not really getting snow as Doc said it's anticyclonic weather. I know I would be seriously frustrated with weeks of bitter freezing cold ice days, sub zero daytime maxes with no appreciable amounts of snow other than the odd flurries.

Sound like the Easterlies we got IMBY during the 80s, horrid depressing weather with a raw bitter wind but without  snow or sunshine.

Thursdays starting to look interesting for the east coast? With all that cold air falling into such a warm coastal strip the drop to a 945mb storm is only to be expected. If it does kick off then we should expect impacts into january for us here on our side of the pond?

Will it mean a run of lows blasting us like we saw earlier in the decade or will we see similar to last year with WAA up the east coast of Greenland driving strong SWesterlies for us here in the UK and a run of springlike temps?

This is so funny as well as informative re the snow event for Virginia & the Carolina's - just watch this esp from 3:20 - it's like a Math lesson, especially when they go on to talk about rain to snow ratio! haha!

Very educational indeed. Not something our BBC/ITV weather presenters /forecasters will explain so worth a watch from 3:20 secs:

In general the American forecasters are far more watchable and informative than their U.K. counterparts, mind you the topless bimbos during the 80s/90s on some of the more obscure US networks take some beating. 😁

Too right! Love how they do the math in this!

Usually we hear "showers turning wintry' that's the norm - this could mean, rain, hail, sleet graupel or snow!! They never talk about the math behind this wonderful science.

The USA weather presenters know how to make their forecasts on TV interesting and watchable! I like their attention to detail and mathematical explanations re ratios! Wish Dan Corbett was back!?

On another topic - look at these balmy high temperatures in Alaska - Anchorage?

+6c as a high today: - Almost some 20c above their January daytime average max of -7c

Despite sometimes being a bit sensationalist on the whole American forecasts are way better and the graphics are as well with much more detail. But then they do need to fill a bulletin every 10 minutes during the morning news so they need the detail!

Just noted that number 19 in the list is doing the Beeb's national forecast today. She'll certainly give Carol Kirkwood a run for her money.

According to one of my friends on Facebook, it’s currently snowing in Savannah, Georgia.

Last time they had an inch of snow was 1989.
