Woah! Wait a sec - didn't this winter storm/nor easter just come out of nowhere?!? The accu weather forecast for NYC (yesterday for today and tomorrow) was for flurries and dustings not winter storms and blizzards ha!?

Did they mis forecast this?

Don't know why the BBC say "bomb cyclone" is a "new term" though.

It';s currently +1c with ice warning in Orlando Florida hahaha This is remarkable - Just think of the tourists going to a tropical climate to find snow and frost yet meanwhile in the UK many wake up to +12 or +13c.

Oh and it's snowing in Tallahassee, Florida for the first time in decades: Now the temp is -3c as I type.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/tallahassee-fl/32301/weather-forecast/328170

So much for the La Nina and a drier and warmer southern USA hahaha! Classic classic! NOT!

Some parts of the southern and eastern states (even on gulf coast) will be 20' degrees below average ! Just imagine this in the UK? If our average for January is +6 or +7c, I couldn't imagine a -16 or a -17c during the day. I friends have gone to Florida to expect warm humid tropical weather not freezing weather with sub-zero daytime temps and snow! haha

Yep, the classic Nina textbook signature has been ripped up this winter. Even here we’ve not had the classic front loaded winter followed by a mild, wet, SW flow for the remainder. Of course it’s only early January but the whole NH profile looks conducive to cold outbreaks even in Europe as we head further into this month IMO.

Eh, that's in northern Florida. Tallahassee has fallen to -18C before. It's still high teens in Miami, recovering to the 20s by the weekend.

That's a pretty well established term AFAIK. It just means a deepening of more than 24mb in 24 hours.

And this winter storm has bombed by 24mb in just seven hours

I think it's safe to say that freezing cold and snow was probably the very last reason anyone wanted to go to America back in ye old days.

Doesn't look like a lot of snow fell in NYC!? How much feel any reports of snow depths from this!?

Meanwhile Halifax, NS Canada look like they will miss out on the snow and get freezing rain and sleet!?

Just looking at snowfall depth totals in NYC:

http://abc7ny.com/weather/snow-totals-how-much-snow-has-fallen-in-the-nyc-area/2861324/

10" is about the average in all that - quite a dumping but not significant or major record amounts by NYC standards when they have seen 2 or 3 ft of sno before also that snow should cause too much disruption as it's dry and powdery snow so i doubt there would be any icy roads either as it has been sub zero there for over a week now!

Its affected a huge area.

I noticed even in the Bahamas near Nassau a min temperature of 8c (46f) and a max temperature of 23c (73f) was recorded yesterday as the cold wave pushed a very long way south.

The average min/ max is closer to 18/30.
