I hope it's not like Winter 13-14 which was absolutely rubbish here, worst in this area that I can remember for being almost absent of snow apart from 1 evening in the February when we got a pathetic dusting. Which was practically gone by 10am the next morning!

Surely having read these posts December mildness is utterly nailed on till at least the last week of December at the earliest?

Looking forward to some pleasant mild weather this week. With central heating off, reasonably light winds and not much if any rain what's not to like?

As for cold spells, anyone remember this very short lived but dramatic one?

And I have a hunch (call it a Brian Gaze Trump / Brexit kind of hunch) that we will see a snowy Easterly this winter, for the first time in years. January I reckon.

Can't believe it is a year ago today that 'Storm Desmond' hit, which gave some huge rainfall totals to parts of both Ireland and the UK. Analysis chart at midnight 6th (from UK Met) The 'storm' itself was more a strong long-fetch flow rather than from an organised depression so sorta unusual in that regard. I remember the rain well, but the winds if I recall correctly were not particularly notable here in the west of Ireland at least.

According to the Met Office it will turn unsettled toward the new Year which means milder I guess!?

Well it's not looking good if proper cold/snow is what you are after. The wait goes on for a significant big freeze - when was the last one? 2013? some may even argue Dec 2010. Whilst it's still early days like I posted further up the thread, time flies and before we know it it's late Winter.

Meanwhile the US has a nice cold shot yet again *through gritted teeth*. And you have to laugh but even California might get in on the act as well further down the line, they have been forecasted a colder than normal Winter in the west. Maybe California's coldest Winter since 1998 or 1990. Further north & Seattle would see max temps around -6C later that day on the 2nd chart. Unusual for them given they normally have shite Winters like us.

I blame Brexit, access to air from the European Union will have to be negotiated, in the meantime we have Atlantic air both summer and winter.

Remember it well Tim I lived in Nottingham. A Saturday morning and a serious wet blizzard deposited 20cm! No electricity or 'telephones' for 24hrs.Wires were sagging towards the ground.

Thousands were marooned including a lot of folk at the Clothes Show, NEC Birmingham

Worst affected area was the Birmingham Nottingham Sheffield triangle

As you say, short-lived in an otherwise mild December

Not a moan from me, but a nod of approval.

Take today for instance, 10 C in soft winter sunshine under calm wind where it felt positively spring-like. I could even smell the scent of summer in the air since the light wind is still wafting in from the near Continent via a relatively warm Channel. The heating went off a few hours ago and I have a couple of windows ajar to let the air circulate indoors.

I could easily live with all that if it could actually stay like this more often than not throughout the winter.

Depressing grey gloomy frost-free muck for the 6th day out of 7th and by the looks of things the mean temperature could end up even higher for the first half of the month than it was last December

Only worse start to winter in my memory was 2002 and if the WeatherOnline forecast is to be believed we could be in for a repeat of that repulsive month.

Quote:

*10/12/16 - 17/12/16*
A mixed week for all.
Hints of conditions becoming cooler again through this week as higher pressure builds.
Winds becoming more southeast to easterly again. There will be some dry conditions, but the risk of drizzle and patchy outbreaks of rain is also increasingly likely during the week.

*18/12/16 - 24/12/16* High pressure may stay east of the country in the run-up to Christmas.
Critically important is the positon of the high as this will dictate what the wind direction wil be.
At this stage we expect an east to southeast wind and for conditions to be cool overall. A risk of some rain or sleet in the west.

*25/12/16 - 31/12/16*
Little change with the cooler, east to southeast flow dominating with higher pressure ot the east.
Driest in the east, although bands of precipitation trying to get into the west which could turn to sleet and snow for some.

The most sickening and revolting forecast I have ever read for winter. Beyond vile Just hopes its accuracy turns out to be as awful as the pidgin English it’s written in. How on earth can a piece with spelling mistakes and poor grammar make it on to, what I had assumed was, a professionally run website?

We'll still have an open border to Irish air masses though. The Norway option would be interesting.

2017 begins chilly and perhaps with a brief more unsettled spell, which could include some sleet or snow.
Generally plenty of dry weather again and feeling

This all looks pretty good really- if you compare, not only to last year's sauna, but most other recent Christmas spells.

Not a single complaint from me this morning. I went on my 3:00 break this morning and it was clear and starry with a temperature of 10°C. That's my definition of a beautiful winter's night!

Was also thinking it felt pleasant out this morning with a temperature of 8c much milder than recently. Certainly no 'horror show. ' Must be getting old.

Typical December weather really.

I haven't been out yet this morning but the house feels lovely and warm this morning. Off topic I guess but no complaints from me either.
