Plenty of dry weekends.

Yesterday was a lovely day. :-)

Maybe it's just my perception!

In June/July we struck lucky in terms of the best weather of the week hitting at weekends, and there was that nice spell late June/first half July. But the last 3 weeks have been really poor.

Yesterday afternoon/evening/night was just horrendous, rain that veered between moderate and heavy all through - I . We had friends over for a BBQ and we have a fairly big wooden gazebo with felt-tile roof that I built, and there's a 10x10 pop-up gazebo over the hot tub thing, so we were all outside and dry - but it was cold. Late on after everyone had gone and the kids were in bed, I was sat under my gazebo and it was pelting it down. I had a fleece on, sipping lager and having a smoke and the rain hammering down was so relaxing - but that's the only positive.

A really awful spell of weather - and more crap to come; this Wednesday has a high forecast of just 15c.

Next weekend had been showing as the start of an improvement, and we're due to go to Alton Towers Waterpark on Monday 14th, which was looking good (it's both inside & out) but that's now looking questionable.

The UK has the worst climate in the world. Misses out on summer dry/heat/sun. Misses out on winter cold/snow.

In terms of warmth and sunshine, not been the worst, thought hardly been the best, summer over here. Curiously though, each of the summer months (inc August so far) have been wetter than average, yet a lot of the rain came in short, heavy bursts which meant it was dry most of the time. Perception wise, would put this summer down as being very average.

Thanks Kev.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it has been particularly good, it just hasn't seemed especially terrible either compared to a few recent summers.

My evidence is purely anecdotal - lots of lunches outside, a fair few BBQ's, and beer garden sessions.

Great start but there's no denying summer has gone down the pan in Chiltern region. A very notable deterioration.

A very front loaded summer and yet another atrocious August, maybe September will deliver warm dry sunny weather as it so often does.

What a pity this summer gone down the pan after a promising start in June. For me 9 days in June does not make a summer, July also had some promise of a few days but gradual deterioration saw to that and its just dull rainy and cool now. Looks like its turning into August 2014 at the moment, the models not showing anything decent and summery. Need a huge flip in the outlook, really hope it turns , and we get some summer back !

Has the projected improvement for the forthcoming weekend and beyond been totally downgraded ?

The improvement seriously weakened, think Thursday the best day, I thought it would be a flip back to summer weather, but now not looking like lasting

Tend to agree. There was a theory at the beginning of the week that the Azores high would be making a welcome appearance at the end of the week but this seems to be a forlorn dream today.  Last weeks Wednesday gales and rain seem to be repeating tomorrow (bar the gales perhaps) so apart from a few hot days in June, this summer has gone down the pan again. If you like warm/hot sunny days that is.

I can cope with the cloud perhaps but the wind is another matter though it's negligible as I type this.

I do find it quite bizarre how even with all of these very warm months being recorded over the last few years, August is still so consistently recording below average temperatures. It's really the only month for cool weather fans that is reliable for cool weather! Even Augusts 2013 and 2016, the warmest of recent years weren't staggeringly warm and still had fairly cool spells in them.

I'm still fully expecting September to turn out well above average though.

I don't normally write months off, but I'm ready to do this with August now. Looks like we're moving into a pattern that can be very difficult to shift, so that means any prolonged warmth and sunshine is completely out of the window for now. The best thing we can hope for is to get the remnants of a hurricane move into the North Atlantic and shake things up a bit.

It looks a real possibility that this summer is going to be the wettest since 2012 for England and Wales.

Not the biggest fan of warm weather so will say that even in an average or cooler than average August, it is rarely cool or cold literally speaking.

If you'd asked me in mid July how good this Summer had been here, I would've said fairly decent, warmer than average and with at least some decent dry and warm spells amongst the wet spells.   A serious deterioration has occurred since then, and now this Summer is threatening to be as bad as the likes of 2007 and 2012.  It's just steadily got wetter and cooler with fewer and fewer usable dry/sunny days.  Thankfully I took my main Summer holiday from work in the first half of July, because at least that was quite a decent period here.

And then came one of the bleakest and wettest Summer days I've known on August 8th.  62mm of unrelenting heavy rain, a max of 13C and the light levels you would normally get at the end of November.

So total rainfall for this Summer is already at 275mm here, and only another 55mm is needed now to make Summer 2017 the wettest one here in the last 35 years.
