Yeh I usually use WRF to gauge an estimate of wind speeds if observations aren't available. It seems its about 45mph sustained now, which is consistent with the full 'medicane' identifier that I use.

I'd say the Medicane has actually weakened slightly over the last 12 hours and filled in by 2mb. This is what tends to happen when tropical storms stay stationary; though I'm not sure if an analogy can be drawn since the processes are different. In any case, Trixie will start to move back east tonight before rapidly intensifying tomorrow.

Malta is closest to the centre and has had sustained wind speeds of about 28mph all day.

Given that it is still 100+ miles from the eye wall a max sustained windspeed of 45mph seems reasonable.

You can see malta here just south of Scicly. The medicane lies between that arrow and the one half way between Italy and Greece. That station is recording winds closer to 35mph

Amazing footage- I know the sound of wind is often exaggerated when videoed, but the waves are testimony to what locally will be unusual conditions. And this only a glancing blow for Malta! I wonder what maximum wave heights might be recorded further east.

One quick thing, I've been monitoring some discussion forums and apparantely I missed a medicane this year.

29th February 2016. Very small medicane developed for a few hours on the back of an extremely strong extra tropical cyclone. Due to its tiny size, tiny lifespan and its insignificance compared to its non-tropical parent; I can perhaps be forgiven for the oversight!
