According to SEPA, there has been a total of 43.8 mm (71.7% of the 1991-2020 February average) of rain during this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 41.0 mm (77.3% of the 1991-2020 February average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh although for quite a while now, the data from SEPA for Edinburgh Gogarbank has always been under-reporting those figures compared to the reports from the raw BUFR/SYNOP data for there.

With this weekend's low pressure system being forecast to dive away to our south without actually reaching here, that is probably the final nail in the coffin as regards to our chances of getting a wetter than average month here in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

That is probably true, even at Swanston although this has been an wetter than average month in terms of the number of rain days (officially defined by the Met Office as the number of days with a daily rainfall total of 1.0 mm or more) at all of my local stations here in Edinburgh.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total up to 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 1.2 mm
Total since 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 2.2 mm as at 9:00 pm GMT (21:00 UTC) this evening on Friday 23 February 2024.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 48.4 mm (79.3% of 1991-2020 February average).
Number of rain days during this month so far: 13 (121.5% of 1991-2020 February average).
Number of dry days during this month so far: 5

This means that at least another 12.6 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual amounts.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 231.2 mm (110.6% of 1991-2020 winter average)
Number of rain days during this winter so far: 42 (113.3% of 1991-2020 winter average).

18 mm so far today, 17 of it fell in the past four hours. That's on top of 8.4 mm yesterday and 16.8 mm the day before.

That comes to 138 mm so far this month and with around 40 mm projected for the next two days according to the model outputs, this is turning out to be a soggy February. Very different to last year's.

Its a great year for our aquifers and the southern chalkstreams, or let's say as good as can be expected from our disgraceful Water companies. At least it allows us to flush the crap that Southern and Thames pump into OUR rivers, albeit that is no excuse for their pathetic environmental credentials.

I was looking back last night at this winter to years past, and this year has seen 280mm so far so might top 300mm. Pretty wet for down here. As much as that's great it pales into insignificance to 2013/4 which saw 450mm, but weirdly the river levels now are exactly the same as back in that winter.

The Lambourn, Kennet and Pang rivers here are totally full and show no sign of falling given the Thames, which they all flow into, cannot take anymore intake.

No month has been "dry" since July and before that Feb last year, so it's been more a constant than extreme of 13/14.

That late shift south made all the difference here: instead of the 15-30mm the models had been predicting, we ended up with just 5.8mm instead.

Bearing in mind I'm only 25 miles away from you - that's a heck of a difference over such a small distance!

The monthly total here is now 85mm... it'd have hit the magic 100 had the rain been that bit further north.
