Feeling the effects of this wet February with further landslides along the Road Of Remembrance and a couple of fallen trees all around the corner from my house.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total up to 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 2.2 mm
Total since 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 3.8 mm as at 7:00 am GMT (07:00 UTC) this morning on Thursday 29 February 2024.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 54.6 mm (89.4% of 1991-2020  average).
Number of rain days during this month so far: 15 (140.2% of 1991-2020  average).
Number of dry days during this month so far: 7

This means that at least another 6.4 mm of rain still needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual amounts.

Today is now the last day of the month and no more rainfall is forecast for today other than the odd shower.

Because of that, we can almost certainly say that this will be yet another below average month here in terms of the actual amounts, and this probably now proves beyond all doubt that Edinburgh just doesn't generally get wetter than average months even if everywhere else in the UK does.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 237.4 mm (113.6% of 1991-2020 winter average)
Number of rain days during this winter so far: 44 (118.7% of 1991-2020 winter average).
Number of dry days during this winter so far: 24

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 126.0 mm (16.1% of 1991-2020 annual average).
Number of rain days during this year so far: 27 (19.6% of 1991-2020 annual average).
Number of dry days during this year so far: 17

Would it even be fair to count today's rainfall when comparing to an average February? I think maybe you count a quarter's worth 🙂

Good point.

We are in a leap year just now which is the only reason why today's date even exists in the calendar, and is therefore a day which only comes once every four years with the exception of those century years (such as 1900 and 2100) which are not also divisible by 400.

I'm not really expecting any rainfall today though and if that is the case, the extra day won't then matter in the overall context of things.

I think it's given up raining for the day so :

209.5mm for the month (of which 6.9 mm today) on 23 pptn days (including today)

Average 21.4mm on 3.27 pptn days in February.

9.8x average rainfall on 6.2x as many pptn days.

Looks like that will be it for this month. Another rubbish month for rainfall, with 145.9mm here. That's the eighth consecutive month to record over 100mm of rain now.

Hopefully spring and summer sees a return to drier than average for a bit.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total up to 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 0.2 mm

Monthly Data

Final Total for February 2024: 54.8 mm (89.7% of 1991-2020  average).
Number of rain days during February 2024: 15 (140.2% of 1991-2020  average).
Number of dry days during February 2024: 7

February 2024 was substantially wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

However, this rainfall never really amounted to all that much at any time and because of that, the actual rainfall amounts for February 2024 were actually slightly below average once again.

Seasonal Data

Final total for winter 2023-2024: 237.6 mm (113.7% of 1991-2020 winter average)
Number of rain days during winter 2023-2024: 44 (118.7% of 1991-2020 winter average).
Number of dry days during winter 2023-2024: 24

The winter of 2023-2024 was wetter than average overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of rain days.

In terms of the actual rainfall amounts though, this is very heavily skewed by what happened during December 2023 which in those terms, ended up being the winter's only wetter than average month here.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 126.2 mm (16.1% of 1991-2020 annual average).
Number of rain days during this year so far: 27 (19.6% of 1991-2020 annual average).

Final February total here is 96.5mm, making it the wettest February in my 40 years of records.  255% of average.    Remarkably, the top four wettest Februaries here have all been since 2020, with 2023 being very dry.   Normal mean rainfall for February here is around 38mm, but the five Februaries from 2020 to 2024 have averaged 70.5mm !

My final total for Winter 2023-24 comes to 248mm, making it the second wettest Winter I've recorded, behind Winter 2020-21.

Also, must be one of the wettest 8-month periods on record here.  Total rainfall for July 2023 to Feb 2024 comes to 739mm. Quite incredible for our locality.
