Now upgraded to a Cat 4; the result of sea surface temperatures around 30c and favourable conditions.

Hitting an area that’s never seen a major hurricane.  The surge of water alone is going to be horrendous, never mind the wind and torrential rain.

Actually it was a Cat 3 on landfall, having lost a little intensity.  Still a major storm though, bringing extensive flooding and strong winds.

Very quickly dropped to a Cat 2.

Hotter ocean temperatures from global warming likely increased Idalia’s destructive power by at least 40-50%

TS (as it is now) Idalia and TS Jose in the Atlantic, not going very far, with Hurricane Franklin heading NE-wards and dropping back to a TS in latitude 50deg N - heading our way? And a disturbance likely to develop in the area of the Cabo Verde Islands. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?atlc

Max rainfall from Idalia 11.6" (29cm) in Marion County, about 40 miles NE of Orlando, and quite a wide area with over half that. Now departing the Atlantic coast with some big storm surges as a parting shot. Fortunately only one death directly attributable (from falling tree), plus a few more in traffic accidents. That leaves Idalia's remnants (may revive as a TS), TS Jose, TS Gert and Hurricane Franklin on the Atlantic of which only Franklin likely to move quickly further N becoming a TS as it goes. Two more disturbances coming away from Africa of which only the second is expected to become significant.

I suspect that in a pre-satellite era some of these would not have been recorded.

Meanwhile there are two cat 2 Pacific typhoons, Saola about to hit Hong Kong and Haikui to reach N. Taiwan in a few days' time.

Saola now upgraded to a Cat 5 Super Typhoon, which is a Cat 3 equivalent on the usual hurricane scale.  Same cause as Idalia, ie warmer than normal sea temperatures providing added energy.

I think that's the one which NHC has now designated TS Katia, but like so many others this year, it only has a forecast short life before running into dry air and/or wind shear. Still, 'hurricanes have a mind of their own'.

95L has appeared off W Africa, but well to the S and may become TS Lee.

Franklin has swallowed up Jose and the resulting mix is now part of the N Atlantic circulation near Greenland. Idalia can't decide whether to revive as a TS or as part of a non-tropical system or maybe not at all - it's no longer being tracked by NHC.

The tendency for this year to produce small shortlived storms is underlined by the statistics. Katia is the 12th TS of 2003 and the figure of 12 named storms is normally Oct 19th; corresponding figures for hurricanes is 3 so far (normally about Sep 7th) and for major hurricanes 2, by Sep 19th.

It may have come from the remanants of Katia but its a brand new thing. And a thing of beauty if it develops in such an unusual location.

NHC ascribes  this system to the remains of Franklin, but plays down any major development.

Meanwhile further S in mid-Atlantic Invest 95L is given 100% chance of becoming TS Lee, and likely to intensify after that.

I'm actually amazed they recognized it at all! Only 2 days ahead this time round, felt like alot more with SS alpha. Feels like the world is finally taking these storms seriously!

Ive seen it suggested that Iee could develop into something quite significant  That remains to be seen however.
