BBC last night showing a major plunge of cold/freezing air on a broad front reaching as far south as the fringes of the Gulf of Mexico. This morning's Accuweather expecting it to disappear as fast as it came, before the temp drops back to an average value. Since it's the contrast between this plunge and warmer air to the south that's firing up the jet stream, we may be spared more major storms.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/dangerous-ice-storm-snow-to-lead-warmup-in-midwest-and-northeast/1615012

From the link, selected, temps last Sun and next Thu, Washington DC 34F >62F, Burlington VT 18F > 41F, Raleigh NC 42F > 71F.

It also says that ice coverage on the Great Lakes is well below norm (14%, usually 25%).

Also an extreme heat wave in North Africa - 32.2C at Agadir airport, which is hotter than the summer average!

17c/18c 850s today in Spain.  Completely nuts. Spain has broken its monthly record 4 months in a row.

Increase of 67% in olive oil prices ( a staple through all S Europe though not so much in Britain) blamed on a 4- or 5- year drought in its growing areas [BBC verbal interview this morning]

I'm in Malaga at the moment and it feels unseasonably warm although places further east and north are even hotter. Most noteworthy to me is that the main river in the city, the Guadalmedina, is totally dry. I would have thought in mid winter it would typically be flowing. No significant rain forecast for the next  two weeks either.

It's interesting that it's only 11C above the mean high for the area... albeit incredibly unpleasant to experience.

To put it into context, the 40C we saw here a couple of summers ago was around 17C above the mean!

According to https://www.weatherobs.com/  there is a station currently reporting 20.4C. However it seems to be
ship but it's position is inland. Make of that what you will! That said, there is certainly an extreme foehn effect going on up there.

Think official station wise looks like Kinlochewe peaked at 19.6c.

The power of the foehn. A historic day.

The upper air temperature around the record was about 6C; thoroughly unremarkable. This was an unbelievably extreme fohen, which also explains why noone talked about record temperatures occuring today; you wouldn't think it from the synopsis

Quite a few thunderstorms about to the NW of Scotland, up to W coast of Norway. Of course, thunder are not that unusual for that part of the world at this time of the year, but they seem more than just simple convective showers in Pm airmass:-
