Given the fact they said that snow would be restricted to the highest ground largely in the north a few days ago for this current week I would be wary about any forecast for a week ahead. When “highest ground” transpires to mean “almost sea level” it detracts from the credibility somewhat. Largely in the north may or may not be correct and time will tell. The sleet or snow for highest ground was evidently going to be wrong from the moment the statement was made. Disappointing and unnecessary.

The graphics and forecast were also based on the ECM 00z op run which has been superseded by a slightly cooler 12z op run and ensembles so even more caution is needed. The max of 0°C forecast here on Sunday will certainly feel seasonal if it comes off, but that is some way off.

A yellow rain warning has been issued for north-east England until 09:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Not quite as good as a 'yellow snow warning', but these still make me chuckle.

Milder, and occasionally wet and windy

Monday 11 December to – Sunday 17 December
Changeable and turning a bit chillier

Monday 18 December to – Sunday 31 December

In the next forecast, we will be able to look at what the long range models are saying for early January. We will also see if they stick with the expected milder pattern through the rest of December, and if they hint at anything colder around the New Year.

Not much sign of a white Christmas from the BBC outlook. Perhaps favoured hilly northern areas?

Looks like they've cocked-up the links.

The data is still there, so just modify the link above with the station's text file and you'll get your data.

Most likely to be unsettled with further bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the west and northwest. The chance of a colder spell of weather, with hazards such as snow and ice, does increase later in December and into the New Year period. However, conditions are more likely to remain generally mild and wet.

I've just read that not one, but two named storms (Storm Elin and Storm Fergus) have now just been officially named by Met Eireann. With these storms coming so close to each other, it's dificult to probably gauge which is which out of those two.

As I write though, it has been absolutely pouring down with rain here in Edinburgh for most of today's daylight hours and it would appear that Storm Elin has been responsible for that.

Even after that clears away, another system is then expected to very quickly take its place tommorow, and it looks as though it is that next system which is Storm Fergus.

All of this now means that we will now have had six named storms under own joint UK/Ireland/Netherlands naming system since the start of this season which is still less than three month ago.

Furthermore, I don't recall any other occasion in the past when we have had two named storms in the same weekend nd so, this shows just how unsettled our weather has now become.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Met office seeing signs of something colder near Christmas

"It now looks probable that there will be at least one short-lived colder interlude next week, with a period of north or northwesterly winds that could bring some snow and ice, especially in the north."
