Police said some drivers had “interfered” with equipment or even driven over it in order to park in the area as firefighters continued to deal with the aftermath of a huge fire at the beauty spot.

Trees are again showing signs of heat stress here, with a lot of yellow and brown leaves falling.

Certainly no drought here in Edinburgh now, as we have very heavy and at times, torrential rain just now which is also being accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Yes, although it took a few weeks longer than on the mainland there are now signs of stress here... hazels seem especially affected, but the cherry tree in the garden doesn't look very happy either, its leaves are starting to curl.

The box hedge is turning a shade yellower too.

Here's hoping for some much-needed rain in the next few days!

Whatever happened to the so called British saying...
"3 Fine Days and a Thunderstorm!?"

We seem to have hot dry weather but anyone notice that we never get a thundery breakdown these days? I remember summers of the 90's and early 00's when we had thunder and lightning - I remember school days of late 80's and early 90's when we had thunder and lightning and power cuts (esp at nights) and as children we all got quite excited. :)

Why are we not seeing these patterns these days?

I'm in Shropshire at the moment so perhaps I'm not seeing the worst of the English drought here. However, while there is some leaf drop and the odd tree(mainly young trees) looking stressed, what is remarkable to me is just how resilient most trees are. Here, at least, the vast majority show no signs of distress despite the worst drought in decades.

Judging by the radar, there seems to have been widespread rainfall in Ireland this evening. It's also remarkable how the drought never really got going at all in Ireland this year. Given tonight's rain and given that we're now halfway through August, that should be that in terms of very dry conditions for Ireland this year. We have been extremely lucky to avoid your drought here - it's pretty unusual for our weather conditions to be so different given our proximity.

Spent Saturday into Sunday down in Cambridge, and I appreciate better just how dry it is down there. The drive back was quite telling. Yellowed, parched grass everywhere up to north of Birmingham, then a yellow-green. Still been a dry summer up here, but not to the scale of further south.

Incidentally, on a mammoth driving day, I then drove me and the family up to Ullswater for a late afternoon/evening paddleboard & swim. Was still 28c at 6.30pm there. On the drive back south through Cumbria, we could see sporadic lightning flashes ahead of us (in the twilight, it looked brilliant). Ran into the heavy rain from the convective activity near Lancaster, but passed through it quickly and was then dry again throughout the rest of the journey. Hot and still back home again.

The edge of some showers caught us here in Guernsey this morning. It is currently a bit murky and much fresher than of late but still fairly warm. Tomorrow and Wednesday are looking rather wet though, hopefully we will get some lightning too as we have a good vantage point across the sea.

10 miles away there have been three heavy storms with hail and thunder, with over an inch of rain falling. Here - zilch. Some impressively dark clouds, but not even a single drop of rain.

Hopefully tomorrow will see some useful rain.

Yup, few spots earlier and that’s it.

The playing fields near me were cut recently and it really laid bare how dry it is - the longer grass was still reasonably green, but underneath it’s completely yellow. Wildflowers have largely died too.

According to the Guardian, Yorkshire and the West Midlands could be the next areas to officially be put into drought. If we don’t get anything tomorrow then it could be a while before we see any rain.

We’re usually the UK capital for thunder storms, yet we haven’t had a single one yet this year!   We’ve heard distant rumbles a couple of times earlier in the year but nothing more. I feel utterly cheated!   But I’m careful what I wish for after winter 2010.

Trees are very resilient and will bounce back. When they’re short of water or get too hot to transpire enough to cool them, they shut down a number of leaves and shed them to prevent excessive water loss.  A preservation mechanism.  Nature is just amazing!  I’m sure you knew that already.

Same here. We did actually get about 20 spots.  I wouldn’t have known we’d had that if I hadn’t been outside under the gazebo with our granddaughter and heard it.
