Spent Saturday into Sunday down in Cambridge, and I appreciate better just how dry it is down there. The drive back was quite telling. Yellowed, parched grass everywhere up to north of Birmingham, then a yellow-green. Still been a dry summer up here, but not to the scale of further south.
Incidentally, on a mammoth driving day, I then drove me and the family up to Ullswater for a late afternoon/evening paddleboard & swim. Was still 28c at 6.30pm there. On the drive back south through Cumbria, we could see sporadic lightning flashes ahead of us (in the twilight, it looked brilliant). Ran into the heavy rain from the convective activity near Lancaster, but passed through it quickly and was then dry again throughout the rest of the journey. Hot and still back home again.
