Idiots in my local FB group out in force. “It was hotter in 1976!”

No it wasn’t.

I heard on the radio news this evening that the Met Office are warning of a potential heatwave early next week. First I have heard of it although the long-ranger does say "there is the potential for some locally hot weather in the southeast".

Feel sorry for them as we had not this problem back in August 2003 heatwave which was forecasted by beautiful Helen Willets and that day she put was celebrated and support when we reached 100F scale.

This time the opposite and no cheer for 40C which is a milestone.   July had been extremely horrible month for them.

I did notice that as the heatwave was building and even on the ‘big day’ itself, the BBC online reports always had a paragraph at the end implying that this extreme heat was as a result of climate change. I felt this was inappropriate because it was an unnecessary part of the story at the time and could have been seen as being provocative to the AGW brigade.  I’d have much preferred them to stick to the facts and leave the Met Office and other expert scientists to do the analysis and draw conclusions after the event.

"Met Office forecaster Tom Morgan told the PA news agency: “The main theme over the coming days will be wet weather, in stark contrast to the rest of July.
“Many areas will be very warm and humid with plenty of cloud around, even overnight, with temperatures as high as 20C in the early hours, meaning uncomfortable evenings for sleeping are in store.
“The odd rumble of thunder may be heard in isolated areas, and it’s going to be pretty muggy and humid, typical of conditions seen in tropical countries.
“Temperatures could climb as high as 29C during the day in southern areas, but it’s going to feel uncomfortable and clammy.”

Yes it was hot and prolonged so much so our local river (Frome) dried up, it's still flowing ok at the moment so I'm not sure this summer is as bad, yet.

The Met Office long rangers seem to contradict each other.

The first one which runs until the 27th says β€œUnsettled conditions will dominate in most areas towards the end of the period.”

But the second one says β€œThe conditions are likely to become generally more settled towards the end of August.”

20 or so miles away from that rural location in our rural location, our highest min was 16.xc in the hot weather recently. We haven't had a night not drop below 19c in the last 8 years of living here.

*BUMP*

You will all be delighted to know that we are going to have a very mild winter.
How do I know?
Because BBC South Today just said so.
They said that Meteorologists at Reading have forecast a much milder than average winter.
So that's it! Winter is over! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
AND....before I'm jumped on, this is very much a tongue in cheek comment.

AccuWeather released their winter 2022/23 forecast for Europe:

https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-forecasts/accuweather-2022-2023-europe-winter-forecast/1259417

Interesting how the forecast is for snow to be below normal in northern parts of Alps but above in southern parts of Alps like northern Italy etc? Anyway, only to be taken as a pinch of salt!

PS - Sorry for abscene been trying to cope with bereavement and moving house and more...! I am not feeling SO excited about the snow and  weather in general, especially given the soaring gas prices and cost of living I don't think i would want a freeze this winter, but wouldn't say no to some snow on Christmas day...? Maybe we could get it at long last?
