Back in the UK, the sun noticeably hotter here in W London the last 45 minutes. Are the hot conditions ready to show their hand?

Sheltering and the foehn effect determining the UK hot spots today, while in France it looks to be entirely down to a strong foehn effect. The usually cooling tramontane wind has turned against the locals of the Provence region, where typically good weather fortune (often fine and sunny but not oppressively hot) has been sorely interrupted.

Here, it's into the 27s and with lower humidity than of late. Feels almost Californian in the wind. Albeit a poor-man's interpretation of it!

Speaking of which, some good lulls in that now with only light, variable airflow - timed one at over over 90 seconds during lunch.

A couple of PWSs just down the road from Villevieille are now at 46C. Of course they may well not be under standard exposure.

Interesting - claims it is a new absolute record, but still provisional.

Yes, I noticed that the sun seems hotter now than it was at lunchtime, and the air has a definite continental feel to it.  The N Sea breeze has diminished as well.  Temp at my local PWS is 23*C which is 2degC higher than this time yesterday.

I like this, it really highlights how vast temperatures can be in my city.

Often what im recording in my area is greatly higher than surrounding stations and its to do with the city layout and typography ..

Look at that 29C and less than 1.5 miles away only 19C haha

Utterly smashed the old record. And in June too!

Yes, a truly historic day in France today, and as other's have pointed out, in late June! I can't help but wonder what kind of temperatures we would be seeing had a spell of the same intensity occurred in late July/early August instead. Somewhere in southern France getting close to 50C? Remarkable!

50C is definitely possible in France now.

Why would it be hotter in Late July though?

By then the solar radiation is down, given that these high temperatures are mostly down to solar heating and foehn wind type effects I'm not sure it would be any hotter in late July. For sure the airmass advected is crazy warm, but is it actually record breaking in the south of France? Ironically the place where it is record breaking (UK) has mediocre temperatures.
