Thanks for the clarification . Arguably a bit deceiving that they include Bristol in the name. Though they leave 'City' out of it, to be fair.

Doing alright there now, even so - 22*C as of 13:50.

Shelter really playing a part for the UK hotspot race; 26*C readings in far-northwest and far-southwest of Wales, along with Newquay and, in the west of Ireland, Shannon Airport.

Bournemouth Airport's not got as much shelter, but the sandy soils around it are allowing for readings in the 25s anyway. Similar temps at my location, but more due to the higher ground of the New Forest to my ENE than sandiness of soil type.

The models - thus far - have handled this brilliantly. Once they'd picked up on the boundary layer being so heavily modified they stuck with it, even as various places were Tweeting about heatwaves and so on. It's a very unusual setup, of course, and it's a good test to see whether the GFS and ECM, both of which now boast far more vertical layers than they did a few years back - can handle the effects of what's in reality a very thin layer of modified air.

So far they've done well. It really is quite surreal seeing a strong gusty wind, thick cloud and a surface temperature of 14C (in my case), knowing that a few thousand feet up it's 18C and humid with it.

Good post Darren!  I’ve been paying more attention to the weather threads on here than the official forecasts and the weather has done pretty much as trusted posters have predicted.  It’s been well explained as well, so it made sense, whereas the Met forecasts have been contradictory.

Anyway, cloud started to break here this morning and we now have blue sky, sunshine and a toasty 22c!

Glad to heat it's picked up so well for you Caz

Meanwhile, it's transitioned from 'British high summer' to 'a bit Mediterranean' here with temps approaching 27*C despite a keen breeze - which is now very turbulent, with some 10-30 second lulls allowing it to feel 'proper hot'.

Not such a hot story when looking at the stations I noted forecast numbers down for, though. London's 3*C short as of 14:50, Southampton's still 4*C short, Birmingham 5*C short (unless that station's also outside the actual city and/or on a hill...) and Manchester Airport's 3*C short.

Unless temps kick up sharply via further turbulent disruption of the wind, or better yet, an overall lessening of it, it appears even more (presumably metaphorical...) eggs will soon be flying toward the faces of those behind the video forecast numbers.

I think most of the high temperatures that have been shown are for the city centres, the main built up areas, the areas that most people will be working/living.

Most of the recording stations away from the greater London area in this region are not in built up areas, and thus will be cooler than nearby urban areas.

Also even within urban areas notable differences can occur - my home city is notorious for this.

By the way its now 26.5C here.

Actually today's max temps in most of the home counties are technicality a little below normal.

This with strong and uninterrupted sunshine on one of the longest days of the year and with very high T850s.

Here in Edinburgh, we have finally managed to get a burst of summer during here at long, long last although even this has been nothing compared to what we saw at this time last year.

As far as today is concerned, today's highest temperature across my three local stations was 21.2Β°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but that was at 11am this morning.

After that and as has been typical of this summer in this part of the world up until now, the temperatures then refused to rise any further thanks to that rather annoying wind from off the North Sea picking up again, which then caused the temperatures to drop a bit during this afternoon.

Having said that though, it still really warm in that sunshine even during this afternoon wherever I was more sheltered from that on-shore wind.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Shannon Airport has beaten anywhere in the UK, with 28.1C at 4pm. Can't be very often that Ireland is hotter than England in summer.

There's already been plenty of 26C and a couple 27C in UK, so wouldn't rule out there being something higher. We'll fine out in 6.5 hours :)

True enough, I was just going by the hourly readings. Highest I've seen on the hourlies in UK is 27C at Newquay and Exeter, which are rounded figures. Highest unrounded figure is 26.6C at Pembrey.

Shannon rose to 28.3C by 5pm.

Been gorgeous here today: 24.6C and not seen a single cloud in the sky. Nice to finally have a proper summer's day!

A frequent hot spot in these conditions is Porthmadog. Highest hourly reading from that station today is 26.8C at 1400

Pembrey airport for 2 consecutive hourly readings between 3-5pm was 27C exact - not rounded. :)

A known hot spot in this part of the world, but an impressive reading given the very blustery winds today.

Edit: 28.0c achieved at Valentia observatory (SW coast) today also:
