Today marks the summer solstice and it could be record breakingly hot. More typical weather is on the way in the next few day.
Wednesday begins with downpours in the north and west but elsewhere it is fine. This morning sunny periods develop widely across the south of the UK and they last through the afternoon. Thundery outbreaks of rain continue to affect the north and west through the day.
Temperatures in the south soar above 30C (86F) and even the north has quite a warm day despite the cloudier conditions. Computer models are showing maximum temperatures of between 31C and 35C so we could get close to the June record, but much will depend on the amount of cloud. Tonight thundery spells of rain spread eastwards across central and northern areas. The south stays dry and humid.
Tomorrow thundery showers affect southern and central areas. It remains very warm in central and eastern England but it will be cooler and fresher elsewhere.
