Snow risk later this week

[Updated 07:15 07/02/2017]

Snow plough

Tuesday starts dry in Wales and much of western England. In the north and east there are outbreaks of rain, and it is cold enough for snow over high ground in Scotland.

Today the wet weather in England gradually pulls away eastwards. Across Scotland and Northern Ireland heavy showery rain continues with further snow over high ground. Showers develop in Wales and the south west too, but elsewhere it should be mostly dry.

Temperatures range from 3C (36F) in Scotland to 10C (50F) in the south west. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight it remains wet in the north east and as colder air begins pushing in the rain increasingly turns to snow. Other parts of the UK have a mostly dry night and some icy patches form as clear periods develop.

Tomorrow the frontal system responsible for today's wet weather is pushed back westwards. It will be decaying but it brings thicker cloud and the risk of some light rain. As colder air arrives from the east a few flakes of snow are possible.

During Thursday and Friday cold air becomes established and snow showers filter into the east. This weekend there is a risk of heavier outbreaks of sleet and snow which could give significant accumulations in places. On Sunday and early next week milder air looks like pushing up from the south. Buzz takes a look.

The 16 day GEFS shows cold weather in the short term. By early next week a milder air mass pushes up from the south but during the last third of the month cold may return.
