Unsettled end to January

[Updated 08:40 29/01/2017]

Flood sign

Sunday begins bright and quite cold across central and northern regions. The south is cloudier and in south western England wet weather has arrived.

During the course of the day heavy outbreaks of rain spread northeastwards and affect much of the country. The exception is Scotland where it stays dry and bright. As well as wet, it will become quite windy in southern and central counties.

Top temperatures range from a cold 2C (36F) in Scotland to a mildish 10C (50F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight the heavy rain moves away eastwards to leave mild and damp conditions across the southern half of the UK. In the north clear spells form and across Scotland a sharp frost develops.

Tomorrow rain pushes into Wales, Northern Ireland and south western England. Elsewhere there should be a reasonable amount of dry weather with bright spells in the north.

During the middle and second half of the week all regions have spells of wet and windy weather. The south will be quite mild but in the north it is likely to be cold enough at times for significant snowfall over the Scottish mountains. Buzz takes a look at the prospects.
