Weather split north to south

[Updated 07:30 03/01/2017]

Frosty weather

Tuesday begins cold in the south with a widespread frost. In the north it's cloudier and milder.

Through the day patchy rain affects the north west. In the far north the rain will be more persistent and accompanied by gale force winds. Elsewhere a dry day is in prospect but cloud spreads southwards into central regions.

The south has another chilly day but in the north it will be less cold. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

This evening frost returns to southern counties but during the night cloud and patchy spells of rain push down from the north and lift temperatures. In the north the opposite happens and a frost sets in by the morning.

Tomorrow the north and east have a cold and bright day but there will be wintry showers near the east coast. Sunny spells develop in the west too and it will be less cold.

Thursday begins with a widespread and sharp frost. Most places stay dry but in the north west cloud builds in the afternoon. Rain returns in the evening and spreads southeastwards through Friday.

The weekend looks mixed but quite mild. On Saturday patchy rain in the south clears but in the west further wet weather is likely. Sunday starts damp in the south east and north west but elsewhere it should be mostly dry.

Next week after a mild start a west to northwesterly flow is expected to become established. The details are uncertain but colder Arctic air may push southwards across the UK. Buzz looks ahead to mid January.

Ensembles at a glance

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows cold conditions early but temperatures then recover. During the second week a mild start is shown before it turns colder and more changeable.
