I expected December to be a cold one with the pattern that was setting up but the zonal spell last longer than I expected. However I stick to my guns that winter overall will be a cold one and I think January will be the heart of it.
I am going out on a limb somewhat here but I think we are in for a sub zero month and severe cold....and not just because of what the models are showing at present.
I am thinking -0.6c as an estimate. Not especially confident about copious snowfall but I believe we will see a fair bit.

A cowardly 3.8 C to start the year.Leaves room for a colder than average start and then later in the month higher temps.

GW's run this comp brilliantly over the years and it's become a real site staple loved by all. But if he's struggling for time, then perhaps he might prefer someone to take over? The lack of the November results, and no list of predictions for December has seen this year's comp end in a bit of a damp squib.
