The sun is out now in Edinburgh and at 17 C we have our warmest day. It feels so good out in the garden! The wind continues to increase now and is roaring through the trees but the first day of lunch outside on the sheltered patio is very welcome
Given those improved conditions (apart from the wind of course), it can be very easy to forget that we're currently under the influence of Storm Kathleen which gave us our overnight rainfall from its associated warm front, and which is now giving us these much windier conditions.
For now, the highest wind gust at Edinburgh Gogarbank is currently only around 41.6 mph from the south but that could increase further over the course of today.
The temperature of 17°C which I reported earlier for here in Edinburgh came from weatherobs.com but if you look there now, you will see that this is no longer shown there but that value was actually correct at the time.
The reason for this is because in the actual data when you click into the dashboard for that, it is only the hourly data which is shown and that is the case even with the raw SYNOP data which is seen when you click into the raw data section of the dashboard.
If you get that data from the raw BUFR data though, that data is contained within a binary file with a .BUFR file extension for each observation, and these files are named according to when those observations took place.
For hourly data, these files will have either ISMN, ISNN or ISNN in their filenames and it is only the data from those files which weatherobs.com shows in its dashboards.
From that data, the highest temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank during today so far was only 16.4°C as at 12 noon (the time when I last observed that) although the 12z reading from that data now shows 16.5°C which does indeed round up to 17°C.
In addition to that hourly data, there are also additional observations which are made every 10 minutes except for 50 minutes past each hour. The filenames of the files with the raw BUFR data for those additional observations have ISAX in them and when you click on any SYNOP station on weatherobs.com to see the latest data in the resulting popup message, that data does take that additional 10 minute data into consideration.
It is from this extra 10 minute data that my earlier reported temperature of 17°C actually came from and that actual value was actually exactly 17.0°C as reported at 11:20 am BST (10:20 UTC) this morning.
Since that reading is higher than the highest hourly temperature reading, that is our actual highest temperature so far although the official maximum temperature will obviously still end up being the same as or higher than that particular temperature in the end.
EDIT:The highest wind gust as at 1pm BST (12:00 UTC) is now around 47 mph from the SSW at Edinburgh Gogarbank and still getting stronger.
