A complete write-off of a day here in Edinburgh with incessant rain all day which has just got heavier over time, and it's still absolutely chucking it down here even as I write.

Since 10am BST (09:00 UTC), there has been more than 14 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank and so today's final total is clearly going to end up being a lot higher than that.

In addition to that, today hasn't even been the least bit warm either with the temperatures rising no higher than around 7°C during the day.

As at 6:10pm BST (17:10 UTC) this evening, the temperature here in Edinburgh was around 6°C.

I can see that you didn't manage to avoid the rain in Dunkeld as you were hoping to.

I also know that you've experienced some very wet conditions before in the Lake District but what we have experienced today here in Edinburgh has been every bit like that.

As at 11pm BST (22:00 UTC) tonight, a total of 22.8 mm of rain had been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank just since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning.

That makes today our wettest day of this year so far and even as I write, it's still raining here although the rain is now gradually easing off now and very slowly clearing away.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 11pm BST (22:00 UTC) tonight was around 5°C here in Edinburgh.

So far, this is actually our best start to any day during this month to date here in Edinburgh but that's only really because there's no rain, mist or fog around for once and there's even a bit of blue sky to my north but it's still a mostly cloudy start to today which means that for now at least, our long wait for our first recorded sunshine of this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank goes on.

As at 7:10am BST (06:10 UTC), the temperature here in Edinburgh was around 4°C.

EDIT

Finally at long last, we've actually just had our first glimpse of the Sun for this entire month, but it's taken until the fourth day of this month for that to actually happen. That elusive first recorded sunshine of this month might not be that far away now though.

Sunny spells up here in Perthshire which are most welcome after a vile start to the month but showers will still contain snow on the highest hills today

Snow will fall more widely tonight down to 100m!

4.0°C with showery rain here. Have now reached 50 mm of rain so far this month. Ridiculous.

Cloudy still with light persistent penetrating rain and fresh SW breeze. A decent drying day would be a bonus.
I've yet to be able to dry laundry outside this year. The radar shows the next instalment of rain approaching from the SW approaches.

It's been dry so far during today and much better than of late.

There's still a lot of cloud around and a total of just 53 minutes of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Just to show what this month has been like up until now though, that is also the total for this entire month so far.

That doesn't amount to a lot but at this stage, anything at all is far better than nothing, especially as we still have Storm Olivia to come during tomorrow which will then be closely followed by Storm Kathleen over the weekend.

As at 3:20pm BST (15:20 UTC) this afternoon, the temperature was still only around 7°C here in Edinburgh so it's still not getting any warmer here despite those sunny intervals.🤢

First 4 days of the month
6 C, 7 C, 6 C and 7 C so quite cold. Snow expected tonight in Perthshire and torrential rain across The Central Belt in the morning (yellow warnings out for both events). It's going to be a horrible journey back to Edinburgh in the morning!
Then temperatures reach double figures at last on Saturday 😁

I'm in Dunkeld, Perthshire and we have moderate snow settling everywhere. It's the heaviest snow I've seen all winter!! This is at 100m above sea level so the mountains will be getting a good covering

Where I am in NW Edinburgh, it's just heavy rain which has given us another 17.8 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank just since midnight and it's still raining as I write although that appears to be gradually easing off now.

It's quite a chilly morning though and at Edinburgh Gogarbank, the temperature dropped to just 1.6°C. This suggests that there could be some snow on high ground with possibly even a bit of sleet or wet snow in those higher parts of the south of Edinburgh (maybe Noodle Doodle might update us on that in your absence).

Without actually being able to see the Pentland Hills, I know that there appears to be a decent covering there because when I looked at this webcam  which you often like to link to in these situations (I can easily get to that from the link on Swanston weather station's website), everything looked very decidedly white.

Meanwhile, the temperature here in Edinburgh was around 4°C as at 7:30am BST (06:00 UTC) this morning.

It hadn't been too bad overnight with about 7mm of rain though gusts over 50mph about 4am
It's 11c now but we were just under a chain of torrential showers gave over 4mm in an hour.
