Here in Edinburgh, we've just had a brief shower with sleet and wet snow mixed in, along with some soft hail even though the temperature is around 7°C.

This just goes to show how the temperature can suddenly drop whenever some heavier precipitation comes along.

EDIT:

As I write, the wintry mix got heavier once again for a while although there is nothing actually lying on the ground as it's far too mild for that.

Lovely blue sky and towering Cumulonimbus now. Cold, only 6.3 C here. I suspect some of the showers will contain soft hail and also snow, over 200m

Even here in the north of Edinburgh where I am, we've had some wet snow and hail mixed in with that (from your reports, it would appear that you have missed on that so far in the south of Edinburgh but I would imagine that you would be even more likely to get something wintry there if you get any of those showers where you are).

Up over the higher gound of course, the chances of snow becomes even greater and I reckon that there could well be a slight covering at least on the top of the Pentland Hills by the end of today.

It's eerily calm out there - there's been rain, but thankfully the squall line fizzled just before reaching here. Now it's grey, with just the odd puff of wind from the NW... a far cry from the strong gusts GFS and to a lesser extent MetO were showing.

I can only guess that the low is further south than forecast, which hopefully means we won't be getting 60mph winds this evening!

No squall here either. Bit of rain with a 3.5C temp drop in an hour.

Well, the wind certainly arrived - with a roar, it went from near calm to not far off a gale in the space of a few minutes. Very unusual, and it coincided with a band of rain moving eastwards. I can't think of many other occasions where there's been such a massive increase in windspeed in such a short time!

The chart from upwind, the yacht club, shows it very well.

Approaching 14 mm as another batch of rain is moving through right now (4 pm) and winds has just picked up.

Note the rain area has a circular look as it moves over Kent, it appears to be a developing secondary low.

Hope you're enjoying the wind!

It's gusting into the high 40s/low 50s here, so it looks like from the morning forecast the GFS (59) was closer than MetO (36).

By lunchtime they'd both, as usual, moved closer to each other: 51 GFS, 42 MetO.

Pah, just for once it'd be nice to NOT have winds stronger than the MetO forecast.

I've never known such a stormy winter. I'll be glad to see the back of it!

The wind didn't actually last long and nor did it amount to much, probably because it had a westerly component rather than onshore so I was sheltered by it. Now at 15.4 mm and there is a chill in the air at 4.8 C currently.

But indeed it felt like the longest Autumn ever.

Sunny with scattered cumulus, just a light wind from the NW - and feeling warm in the sunlight, as would be expected.

I've been out in the garden again and aside from sinking into the lawn (and mud in the "wild part" of the garden), it continues to feel like spring.

Note that's early spring, rather than summer - the high dewpoints have, for now, left us.

Currently 7.9, dew 5.2, the overnight low being 3.1.

After a cheerful start, it is now grey, gloomy and overcast with spitty rain. All making the current 6.9 C feel raw in a mod SW breeze.

Autumn drags on.

A shower of rain, hail and wet snow just passed through Edinburgh. A classic cumulonimbus with anvil as it approached! The temperature is fluctuating between 5 and 7 C today so feeling chilly in the wind

We got the very tail end of that here in the north of Edinburgh with the skies even remaining clear over and to the north of the Firth of Forth during that time.

We got a little bit of rain from that which didn't even amount to anything and unlike yesterday, there was nothing in the way of hail or wet snow here and even that covering of snow which I was hoping to see on the tops of the Pentland Hills has failed to appear.😡

During the day, the temperatures have been around average for the time of year and colder than of late, though still not all that cold.

At nights' we've even managed to get the odd slight ground frost but I've now forgotten the last time that we had an actual air frost as that was so long ago.

Cold, calm with the full moon shining brightly in the west.

0.6, dew -0.3, the overnight low so far being 0.4.

That's a good couple of degrees colder than the previous coldest night this month.

Yesterday's high was 9.3.
