Sussex reservoirs beginning to show an uptick after the rain so far this month.

Presumably the chalk aquifer will follow suit after a delay while the rain percolates down.

Blimey. 97 to 100% full!
But some people are insisting we desperately need this rain?

Here's hoping April is rather dryer 😊

From saturation maps over the last few months, and from the locations of farmers worrying about crops, the area that needs the rain is from East Anglia northwards up the East Coast. A lot of rain seems to have fallen south of the M4 by comparison, and again tonight.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 51.2 mm (97.5% of 1991-2020 March average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 56.2 mm (115.9% of 1991-2020 March average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of dry days during this month so far: 8 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that at least another 1.2 mm of rain still needs to fall at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, at least another 3 rain days still need to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days and we are now getting a bit short of time for that to actually happen.

However, this month will go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh if any more rain days are recorded there between now and the end of this month.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh are as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total up to 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 7.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 6.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 58.6 mm (111.6% of 1991-2020 March average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 62.6 mm (129.1% of 1991-2020 March average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of rain days during this month so far: 9 (87.5% of 1991-2020 March average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 10 (101.7% of 1991-2020 March average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of dry days during this month so far: 8 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that more rain has now fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this month than the 1991-2020 March average and so regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this month will go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that,  at least another 2 rain days now need to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

However, more official rain days have now been recorded during this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than the 1991-2020 March average and so this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

Seasonal Data

Total for this spring so far: 58.6 mm (39.5% of 1991-2020 spring average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 62.6 mm (45.7% of 1991-2020 spring average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of rain days during this spring so far: 9 (29.8% of 1991-2020 spring average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 10 (35.6% of 1991-2020 spring average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of dry days during this spring so far: 8 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There are three months in each season and we are only just coming towards the first month of this spring, yet the botanic gardens in Edinburgh have already had almost half of their 1991-2020 average spring rainfall so far during this spring.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 134.6 mm (17.2% of 1991-2020 annual average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 130.0 mm (17.9% of 1991-2020 annual average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of rain days during this year so far: 27 (19.6% of annual average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 26 (20.3% of 1991-2020 annual average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Number of dry days during this year so far: 39 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 37 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

At the end of this month, we will be a quarter of the way through the year and this means that we should be getting around a quarter of our average annual rainfall during any given year up until then, but we are still clearly lagging behind that target by some considerable margin just now as shown by the above data.

Note

This data has been obtained from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) by using a beta version of their latest upcoming API system.
