Met office update represents a profound change in direction for January:

🤮

There isn't a more depressing weather in winter than mild and wet.

Indeed, really don't like the looks of the wind profile for late Friday/early Saturday on the 18z GFS. Just hope that it is overdoing it, especially as other models are showing a more toned down theme. I know it's something we expect to occur one or twice every winter, but thankfully on this occasion it looks like pressure will rise thereafter.

Typical front loaded La Nina winter most likely.
I do dislike cold and snow when days are very dark and short - it isn't so bad even by February.

Yes. I saw that and the irony is that Fridays update mention about drier and frosty weather more likely and something like "temperatures below average or colder than average conditions more likely towards mid January". Furthermore this so called " a trend towards milder and wetter weather!" Well it never really gets dry or cold looking at the 18z so the Met office may as well say "mild and wet weather continuing"

I know I am clutching straws but the hope is there for a SSW looking at the 18z GFS at 10hpa esp toward the end.

No relief in sight for those hoping for another cold spell. WX temp charts show cold air tucked up well out of the way in W Russia and N Scandinavia, and mild air spreading even further N through the Atlantic up to Iceland in week 2. Rain as ever for Atlantic coastal countries in week 1, with some extension of pptn into the Baltic, but back W-wards in week 2 still including Britain and W Norway.

GFS Op - zonal stuff, with LP generally to the N of Scotland  and HP to the S of France generating W/SW-ly winds pushing far into Europe. A little extra excitement Sat 31st as one of the LPs comes further S and deepens 955mb N Ireland, moving through very quickly though; the HP forecast yesterday for later on is much less in evidence for Britain, staying over SE Europe instead.

FAX places the LP centres further S, close to or over Scotland with a procession of fronts and troughs for all.

ECM  as GFS though the storm on Sat 31st arrives a day earlier and is less deep

GEFS - temps as yesterday , mean rising irregularly to norm by about Sat 31st and then consistently above for the next ten days (very mild, say 6C above norm by Sat 7th). Lots of rain until about Tue 3rd, then drier esp in S & E (NW Scotland remains very wet)

Might be just a hint of a dip at the very end of GEFS but looks to be a continuation of milder wet and windy.

Still potential of a nasty storms later this week, when you need the euroslug to push north it never does

If we cant have cold and snow, then I'd rather have a Bartlett on speed with record mild temps

Stupid illegal storms don’t move away like snow will as models lie to everyone all the time. I don’t take any notice of them now as governments send snow to Cyprus and rain to here for reservoirs

Totally agree Matty. 50 years ago all the models were 100% accurate for the next month at least. Now they don't get the forecast for the same day correct. No wonder our weather is so boring and rubbish....
