2018 (to 8 Aug): 25C+ 51 days, 28C+  32 days, 29C+ 27 days, 30C+ 24 days, 32C+ 6 days, 35C+ 2 days

So we would need every day from now till the end of August to reach 25C to beat 2018 on that score! However the GFS this morning would see us catching up on the 28C+ count, and probably catching up on many of the others (not to mention smashing the 35+!)

So Tim's feeling above is correct, only 10/23 28C days have hit 30, compared with 24/32 in 2018. Also shows how amazing 2018 was, 51/69 days so far had reached 25C!

There's quite a bit of high cloud around here. Models suggested the west country would be the hottest today which is generally the case although south Wales is putting in a good shout too.

We now have a Met Office amber heat warning from Thursday to Sunday.  I know there was a heat health alert already, so I guess this is no surprise.

Same here - though now cleared.  I think it's what stopped one of the Pershore stations from hitting 30c.   Although I did get 30.8c in my garden.

Yes looks like 30.1 was the top today. Yeovilton also just made it to 30.0C.

To be fair, the models have done very well this summer.  The heatwaves have been picked up quite early.  Even during the early first one, when temps plummeted unbelievably overnight, they got that right. Then the last one, picking up that unbelievable 40c very early.

I was forgetting the time zone  difference. Hotter than same time yesterday in the key spots.

GFS has somewhere just scraping a 33C but it’s been a tiny bit over in recent days so I’d guess the warmest spot will get something like 32.2C.

Out of curiosity in the rankings of the hot UK summers I have collected together the data where I can (the full daily data for 1976 for the entire summer seems impossible to find, so I have only got the 30C+ days there).

For info, listed as year, followed by days above 25C, 28C, 29C, 30C, 32C and 35C in the three summer months.

1976: ?, ?, ?, 17, 15, 5
1995: 61, 40, 31, 27, 12, 1
2018: 59, 33, 27, 24, 6, 2
2022: 38, 24, 17, 11, 5, 2 (up to 9 August).

1995 is still the daddy as far as I am concerned, with a whopping 27 days above 30C, and 40 above 28C. However when talking extreme heat duration (above 35C), 1976 is the champ for now.

After the coming week, I think 2022 is likely to take the "extreme heat" crown from 1976, but 1995 is still the overall summer to rule them all. Shame about the cruddy start to June though - 8 days in the first half of June 95 failed to even reach 20C!

So we could exceed 30C from today until Sunday here. That would make 9 days above 30C this year. I think that would be equal to/slightly higher than 1995.

The extended May-Sept season is important for things like general feel of the summer. On my summer index by far the top years for May-Sept are 2018 and 1989.

Yes if I ever have the time I might extend the stats, but it involves manually transcribing the maxima from the Daily Weather Summaries which is pretty tedious. I don't know of any online source listing daily maxima each day that far back.

And for 1976 the data don't seem to exist online at all - the Daily Weather Reports pre-1980 don't include the overall max as far as I can see, which is a bit of an omission. Just the daily max for each station, rounded to the nearest degree.
