Imagine the self righteous hysteria in the Guardian and on the BBC if it were Conservative MPs being incarcerated!

I view the tax evasion avoidance undertaken by high flying mainly Tory supporters (and financial contributors) to be far more heinous a crime than this, regardless of which of the two types of activity is subject to legal trial.

Indeed.

It seems ok for Labour and quite acceptable but not for the Tories it would seem.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/mar/31/jim-devine-sentenced-expenses-fruad (sp.)

"The former Labour MP Jim Devine has become the third parliamentarian to be jailed over the expenses scandal after being sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment.

The 56-year-old former trade union convenor made false claims totalling £8,385, "knowing full well just how wrong it was and the effect that false claims were having on the public's belief and confidence in parliament", Mr Justice Saunders, passing sentence at the Old Bailey, said."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12918742

"Ex-Labour MP Jim Devine has been jailed for 16 months for fraudulently claiming £8,385 in expenses.

Devine was last month found guilty of using false invoices for cleaning and printing work.

The ex-MP for Livingston, 57, is the third current or former MP to be jailed for fiddling their expenses, but was the first to stand trial.

The judge, Mr Justice Saunders, said he "set about defrauding the public purse in a calculated and deliberate way".

Jim Devine just about sums up everything that is wrong with the Scottish Labour Party and it's arrogance which knows no bounds. They the party are for the people and therefore they know they can do no wrong, because they are the party for the people it's fine to get fat off the tax payer expenses, after all they are for the people and they deserve all these perks for looking after you and me.

They believe they have a divine right to rule this land and to subject the interests of Scotland to always be second to that of the 'Party'. In 2007 Single Transferable Vote swept Labour one party statelets to oblivion, that wind of change through the councils is opening eyes, changing attitudes. It may take time, but people are wakening up to the reality that Labour offers Scotland nothing.

Serwotka rarely disappoints but, for me, many members of the audience came out on top.

Abbott is tragic. Its not just her incoherent, ill-informed ramblings that get me, but the fact that not a single word she utters appears to come from any firmly held belief or underlying ideology.

Utter Tosh! These are not "Tory" cuts - they are essential cuts agreed and supported by the Coalition Government.

You only have to listen to Danny Alexander or Vince Cable to understand that.

This is responsible Government and irresponsible opposition from a Labour Party which was responsible for causing the fiscal mess in the first place.

In other words, the Lib Dems have gone into this deficit reduction programme with their eyes wide open and as I keep pointing out, they were the party during the election campaign which was most up front about the need for spending cuts!

I have no time for Serwotka since I heard him spouting nonsense on Newsnight that not a penny should be cut or a single job lost. What a plonker!

Apparently your insult of choice for those who undermine your thin veil of justification for the ideologically driven cuts.

Along with the other 'plonkers' he obviously threatens your position and dares to tell the public the truth of what is being done to them in the name of fiscal rectitude.

I sometimes wonder whether you have been smoking too much weed Brogdale.

Anybody who thinks that not a penny should be cut or a single job lost is perforce a plonker. Serwotka was on Newsnight with a Labour representative (cannot recall his name) who was arguing that Serwotka's position was simply not credible.

The cuts in this case are not ideologically driven, they are reality driven and as far as I can tell, the Lib Dems at least understand that and in Parliament are fully behind the necessity for them.

The first bolded bit here being the very tiny minority view point, the rest see them as being driven out of our future (both short and long term) financial stability.

The second one should really read 'dares to tell the version of the truth he has chosen to believe'............I won't add a misguidedly in there, but of course I could

btw...

"A new YouGov poll published today (Saturday) shows the majority of people in the UK back the aims of today's TUC March for the Alternative.

YouGov asked: 'On Saturday 26 March, members of the public, community groups and trade unions will march in London to campaign against public sector spending cuts. Generally speaking, do you support or oppose the aim of the march to campaign against public sector spending cuts?'

The majority (52 per cent) said yes, with one in three (31 per cent) disagreeing. Even one in five Conservative voters back the aims of the march."

"..tiny minority view point.."

Clearly, those questioned don't understand the argument. If it were put to them that there should be "No Cuts" I think you would find a majority would find that incredible.

The facts have to be explained and it is no good pontificating about "dares tell the truth", since the truth is that cuts are absolutely essential in the drive to fix the fiscal mess.

Anbody who thinks there can be no cuts is deluded, misguided or had too much waccy baccy. Even Red Ed understands there have to be cuts, he just won't spell out which cuts!

P.S. If you had a YouGov Poll asking people if they think they should pay more tax, you would get a majority saying NO! That is just how it is with these polls.

I can see how all of those assertions are consistent with your desire, and the government's narrative for cuts to be made to public spending.

But you are anonymous!

Anyway, it is impossible to understand how anybody could possibly think there could be "No Cuts" in our current circumstances - as I keep reiterating, that is not even Labour's view - it can only be the viewpoint of very selfish public sector workers who think the rest of us and our future can go hang!

As for Polls - as I put before, it would be interesting to run a YouGov poll to find out how many people would favour paying higher taxes.
