In the end, a total of 1.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 1.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 1.8 mm of rain has fallen during today so far as at 10pm tonight, along with 3.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 50.8 mm, the total for this summer so far to 148.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 418.2 mm as at 10pm tonight.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 65.6 mm, the total for this summer so far to 149.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 421.0 mm as at 10pm tonight.

Just at least one more rain official rain day needs to occur at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month, for this month to go down as being wetter than average at that station in terms of the number of official rain days. WIth this coming Sunday expected to be a wet day, that should now happen without any problems.

However, at least another 17.1 mm of rain needs to fall at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average at that station, in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. There is still an outside chance of this happening but whether it does or not, may well depend on how much rain we get from Sunday's weather system.

If we get a big total from that, this could be what results in this month being wetter than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

If the total amount of rain from that weather system is small though, this could equally result in that being the final nail in the coffin which kills off altogether, the chances of this month being wetter than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank in terms of the actual rainfall amount.

In the end, yesterday was a completely dry day at Edinburgh Gogarbank, although 0.2 mm of rain was recorded during yesterday at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh probably due to condensation.

However, a total of 4.2 mm of rain has fallen during today at Edinburgh Gogarbank so far as at 5pm this afternoon, along with 3.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 55.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 153.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 420.4 mm as at 5pm this afternoon.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 69.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 153.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 424.4 mm as at 5pm this afternoon.

Since the number of official rain days during this month so far at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is now more than the 1981-2010 August average for each respective station, this month will now go down as a wetter than average month at both of those stations in terms of the number of official rain days.

Since more rain has fallen at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this month so far than the 1981-2010 August average for that station, this will also go down as a wetter than average month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

However, the latest rainfall total for this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank is still 12.8 mm short of the 1981-2010 August average for that station. The outlook for the rest of this month is changeable, but that period is likely to be drier than average overall.

This doesn't mean that there won't be any more rain days between now and the end of this month. However, further frontal systems are likely to be much weaker than today's weather system and bring only a band of showery rain. Any other rain which falls during the rest of this month is likely to just be in the form of showers and so the overall amount of rain from that isn't expected to amount to much.

This means that in order for this month to still have a chance of being wetter than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank, there needed to be quite a big total out of today's weather system as a result of that being the most active system which we are likely to see between now and the end of the month.

However, it would appear as though today's total falls well short of what was required for that to happen and because of that, we can probably now safely that this month will now gown as being slightly drier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank in terms of the actual rainfall amount, albeit still wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days.

Local station to me now up to 79.2mm, so noticeably wetter than average although it really hasn't felt that wet. There's been a few noticeably intense interludes, although they've often come late in the day which has probably helped.
