Local station to me now up to 79.2mm, so noticeably wetter than average although it really hasn't felt that wet. There's been a few noticeably intense interludes, although they've often come late in the day which has probably helped.

Since my last post on this thread, there has been no further additions to the rainfall totals here with nothing at all, even coming from the cold front which moved through during last night and the early hours of this morning.

This leaves the total for this month stuck on 55.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 69.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. In my last post, I mentioned that any further weather systems which moved through during this this month would be weak with any further rainfall just in the form of a few showers. Since I did at least expect to get a few showers here, it is actually turning out to be even drier now than what the models had indicated.

Going by the chart below as well, those above totals are now starting to look like the final totals for this month as a result.

Ended up with a useful 18.4 mm of rain here at this end today. The rain - whilst not thundery - was much more long lasting than I thought.

I'll have to do an add up of this month's total but I'm willing to bet that it'll be above average for August.

I've just done my sums and it came to 96.4 mm for this month here at Folkestone. That's twice the August average for this area.

I suspect the long gaps in between the rainy spells might explain why my lawn still look like something out of a third world country. (© Jiries).

Now that we have just entered another new month, I can now confirm that my final total for August comes out as 55.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 69.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 81.1% of the 1981-2010 average for that station whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 114.6% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during August.

Overall, this shows that in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, August was a drier than month at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but a wetter than average month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. When you balance everything out though, we are more or less say that the rainfall amounts in this part of the world were around average during August.

However, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 12 official rain days during August and this shows that it was a wetter than average month there in terms of the number of official rain days since that amounts to 107.1% of the 1981-2010 average. It is a similar story at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which had 14 official rain days with that amounting to 144.3% of the 1981-2010 average.

Since we have also just entered a new season, I can now confirm that the final total for the summer was 153.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 153.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 79.1% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 82.1% of its 1981-2010 average during the summer.

This means that in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, it was a drier than average summer overall at both of those stations.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 26 official rain days during the summer which is 81.8% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 29 official rain days during the summer which is 100.7% of the 1981-2010 average.

This means that in terms of the number of official rain days, Edinburgh Gogarbank had a drier than average summer, whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh actually had a slightly wetter than average summer in terms of the number of official rain days.

Over the year so far, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 420.4 mm of rain which is 55.7% of the 1981-2010 averages whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had a total of 424.4 mm of rain during this year so far which is 60.3% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 75 official rain days during this year so far which is 54.6% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 82 official rain days during this year so far which is 66.0% of the 1981-2010 average.

Final total here is 49.9mm which is 64% of the local average - lawns looking quite green now - the missus said " Have you painted the lawns "green?"  A different story just 2 - 3 inches down - the sandy soil still very dry. Real problems here if we get a dry winter and another dry summer - but that's too far away to worry about just yet!  

Final total for August is 56mm, very close to our average of 59mm.

Total Summer 2018 rainfall here was 120mm (71%), making it our driest Summer since 1996.  

I got 39.9mm here. Obviously much wetter than June or July, but I'm surprised to see how much wetter it was along the south coast and in Kent. How did that happen?

There were a couple of rain events that were focused on the far SE.

16.6mm on the 9th from a French trough

15.6mm on the 10th from some heavy showers in the NW'flow that intensified over Kent

14mm on the 26th from a slow moving front

18mm on the 29th similar.
