Overcast leaden skies and drizzle as I type.

If you define a "boring" month as one with the smallest difference between the warmest and coolest day of the month as measured by the CET Mean, then this has been the most boring August since 1855 so far. Although as there are another 10 days left to record this month AND the data is still provisional I am being a tad unfair

However, the difference between the warmest and coolest CET Mean so far is only 4.1C (11/8 was 13.9, 17/8 was 18.0) and you have to go back 162 years to find a lower range of 4.0C in August 1855

Glad to report that the Met Office has arisen from slumber although the CET for August up to 21st is still only 15.5C (-0.4C)

Certainly looks like the BH weekend will send it upwards of 16, at least for a time.

I'm amazed the CET is currently almost bang on the average. The extreme south east of England (Kent, Essex) has actually had a decent month but it feels to me like a cool month so far and I live just a few miles from one of the CET stations. I was expecting the 2 CET stations further west to bring it down even more. I suspect the night temperatures must have helped to keep the average up.

My monthly mean reached 17.0 yesterday, and is likely to finish at around 17.2 or higher.

I'm expecting the CET to crawl up to slightly above 16 by the Tuesday, though a cool end may bring it back down.

It is the minimum figures that are keeping the CET as high as it is. The data on the Hadley site which uses 1961-1990 as its reference shows the minimum CET is currently 0.6C above average whereas the maximum CET is 0.6C below average. Hence overall close to average.

There is a positive anomaly again, which means we could get all 3 summer months above the LTA.
