If that verifies it will be the third warmest July since 1995

I can live with that

It's been a lovely, warm, occasionally hot, month in lowland Devon. Not like 1983 for persistent hot, still days but, given the number of days with winds of a N quarter (or perhaps viewed another way lack of obvious feed from the continent) surprisingly warm nonetheless.

Looks like the final number was 17.72C. Poor prediction from me compared to previous months.

I've been slowly but steadily creeping up the league table and this month won't do me any harm! I might even reach the top half

Not bad really - seemed warmer than that though.

Well it was and it wasn't. People have very short memories I think.

The first 11 days of July saw a mean CET of just 15.9C which is 0.3C below the 1971-2000 mean for that period

From the 12th to the 31st the mean CET was 18.8C which is 2.2C above the 1971-2000 mean for that period

Another point worth noting is that the anomaly for the maximum CET was much higher than for the minimum CET. That would have added to the sense that it was very warm month

Maximum CET 23.00C (+2.02C) But still 1C cooler than 2013

Minimum CET 12.45C (+0.51C)

Here are the charts for July. Another very warm month but a cool start in the first 10 days meant the overall figures are not by any means exceptional.

Nevertheless the 10 day period from the 17th to the 26th saw a mean CET of 20.1C

Warmest first 7 months of the year on record in the CET series. Mean of 10.74C. Next highest is 1846 with 10.55C

The transformation from 10 days in was impressive in the south; my local mean jumped from a low point of 16.09*C on the 9th (notably below average) to a near-average figure of 16.92*C just three days later.

It appears the CET region did not experience anything nearly as warm 10th-12th July, or in fact out to 16th July, by which time my local mean was sitting at 17.14*C.

For those living in the south, the impression of a toasty month is probably more marked in general than for those in the Midlands, for example.

CET annual competition - July update

Gusty returns to the top of the table this month with now a healthy lead over Darren S. Gusty has still managed a prediction error of less than 0.5C every single month this year. If that continues nobody will catch him.

redmoons moves up to 4th this month which is the highest position this year.

Devonian also reaches a high point climbing four to 8th as does nouska up six in 12th.

Highest climber this month is Saint Snow up 11 to 15th. Long time since we have seen him near the top of the table. Can he make a late challenge this year?

Weathermac, DaveinHull and roger63 all make it into the top 20 for the first time this year.

There are a number of big fallers this month all going down by at least 10 places - lanky, Hungry Tiger, wallaw and Quantum.

Gusty is Mr Consistency this year, whilst Darren blinks first. Slightly. Incredible forecasting, though.

I'm at the point now where I just don't care any more - Will have fun with all my predicitions from now until December, then re-group next year - Hence the 18.0 predicition for August!

I'm sure there's one or two people who'll read that and groan, after following your lead

The first 2 months of summer 2014 are the 30th warmest on record in the 356 year CET series. So a very respectable summer so far. We have of course had a summer of warmer summers in recent years but equally plenty that have been a lot cooler.

June - July top 10 CET means since 1976

1976 17.85C
2006 17.80C
1983 16.95C
2003 16.85C
1995 16.45C
2014 16.45C
1989 16.40C
1994 16.25C
2005 16.20C
2010 16.15C
